I was 400m from a glacier in Chile in a kayak when the wall collapsed. It's been a recurring nightmare since. Glad you came away safe Sam; to anyone watching, this isn't best practice so please don't copy.

Lived here for 11 years. Never even considered going that close to a glacier front. Darwin have cleaned up a few times on people doing that already and a few more escaped on sheer luck. It's the same ice on the icebergs, safer to chop some chunks from them.

I use that exact same heater core "heat exchanger" in my work truck for Wisconsin winters. Works great to heat a 10ft uninsulated box even when the temps are below 0 F

The bad seamanship and risk evaluation shown when you went right under the glacier is really disapointing. Collapses isn't as rare as folks might think. It even came on national news (NRK).

@@SpicyTrifongo the best way is with camouflage. You can't exactly hide from them, as their eyesight is insanely good..so you go incognito, preferably in a baby seal costume, as seals are not uncommon where there are polar bears.

It was marked on the chart - even on the screen capture shown here - and the chart says restricted area, more information from the government of svalbard. That should give a hint. Svalbard is very fragile environment and there are quite a lot of restrictions for tourist activities.

@@braithmiller The issue comes when, say, he gets up to the iceberg and a piece falls off and takes out 3/4 of the bow. Now a group of people have to come out and try to rescue another group right next to an iceberg. Needlessly having to put their lives at extra risk just to put some ice in a drink. It's selfish. I dont hate Sam or the rest for doing this or anything. He should do better and think about consequences to his actions though. The burden of those consequences dont always lie just on ones self.

Your hunch is dead wrong. The option to do time, does not exist.. It's possible to see if the infraction on the bird sanctuary was even gross, or if it was a mistake due to insufficient marking on available charts and documentation, in that case the fine could be reduced or cancelled, on the other hand if upheld, and funds exist i.e. boat or other, arrest in the boat could be made, until the fine is payed, and no one would have to do time.

Wow, that was some ballsy...or foolish...sailing (I haven't decided which). I wouldn't be sailing anywhere close to huge chunks of ice in a fiberglass boat for fear of the portion of it that is underwater (Titanic, anyone?) and certainly not directly up against a huge glacier....all it would take is one chuck to become dislodged and you are sunk in about a minute.

Hi, getting that close up to the glacier, was not only frightening, but down right stupid. These monsters tend to "calve", i.e. loosing big chunks up to hundreds of metric tones of ice. If the ice does not kill you the waves might. PS a bigger glacier in Greenland recently calved a piece of ten billion tonnes, the size of lower Manhattan... Makes for a great amount of Gin Tonic, accompanied by harps playing and angels singing.... For the rest I do enjoy your videos Sam.
