This movie is anything but a horror film. It's only sort of coincidentally an alien movie. All the bits and pieces are sort of just a means to explore ideas of time. linearity, human relationships and so forth. It's a gorgeous piece of work. All of Villeneuve's movies have incredible sound tracks, most definitely, and generally visuals to match. He and Nolan have both really mastered putting atmosphere on screen. BTW, you should do "Deep Impact". It's another movie that is on the surface about a meteor strike on the earth, but in fact is just a brutally emotional exploration of human nature. There are few movies that make me actually sob, but this one has done so multiple times.

That’s a good takeaway. This is one of my favorite movies because it makes a very convincing case that communication is the foundation and driving force of civilization. But while I love this movie for the moral it teaches, I can’t help entertaining the question of what would happen next within the story. These beings can see 3000 years into the future. Just how much control over their own perception of the universe, through both space and time, do they have? The dark side to this is that they’re clearly so much more advanced than even the protagonist was by the end of the movie. Who’s to say what kind of “help” they will request. If they are such masters of perception that they can see 3000 years into the future, well beyond the limitations of a modern human lifespan, then who’s to say our lives are any more sacred to them than chicken’s are to us? The language may expand the perspective of our species greatly, but even our leading human expert on this language, who is a professor of linguistics, seems to have a tenuous grasp of how to use it efficiently or even to explain it to other people. Even more frightening: it ultimately doesn’t matter. Because the rational response to the assumption that they are that much more in control of the situation, technologically and evolutionarily, is to submit to their will, at least until they behave in a hostile manner. This runs the risk of being manipulated into a terrible situation, but if you know you’re so incredibly outsmarted and outgunned anyway, perhaps submission means a happier, more blissful life, for however long it lasts anyway.

The best things in this, for me, was how the Heptapods ALWAYS knew all the human languages - and knew she had to let them learn at her own pace. Abbott was the MVP- knowing before they ever arrived that it would mean his death and doing it anyway.

Yeah, Abbott is a hero, but this kind of heroic sacrifice probably means something different to them, since they do experience time in such a different way. In a way, Abbott will live forever in the minds of the rest of the Heptapods, as the past for them is no different than the present or future, until the last Heptapod that knew Abbott is also death process. Presumably, this isn't for at least 3000 years.

I also believe this was an Oscar-worthy performance by Amy Adams! After multiple re-watches of the film, you can literally see and understand every thought and emotion Louise has throughout the entire film on her face and body language. Her role was masterfully acted and extremely powerful. Adams' performance and Villeneuve's direction was world-class!!

The scary thing is, the Universal Language very well could have been a weapon rather than a gift. If it hadn't been distributed to all, and used only by one power, said power would then have the ability to see the future, and become unstoppable. Louise being the one to learn and share this gift was necessary. I truly love this film. It's easily one of my fav sci-fis, and by far my favourite alien movie. It's about building bridges, not just between ourselves and extraterrestrial life, but our fellow man as well.

I discovered the endind of the film (that it was not a linear narrative) during the conversation between them, in which she mentions "you can end up single", because at the beginning of the film there is a very clear and close shot of her hand with a wedding ring and her voice-over said "I used to think this was the beginning of your story". I really love this movie.

This movie definitely warrants multiple views. Amy Adams's character talks at the beginning of the movie saying, "We are so bound by time. By its order." The aliens experience orderless time, unbounded by time. The implications are very strange. But they don't imply that there are multiple possible futures - that anything anyone does can change the future. It's an odd notion. But I don't think Amy's character has the ability to change anything - she just sees all of her past, present and future at the same "time". Well, my head hurts if I think too much about it. It's such a good movie. If science fiction uses strange worlds/situations to better explore what it is to be human, mission accomplished.

The story it's based on is called "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang, and is well worth reading too. It's broadly the same basic plot, but I read it after having seen the film and I was still roped in. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. The written story has more physics, but the physics is explained so that I could understand it (and if I can, anyone can). But the movie does actually do one or two things better. They're both great and can be enjoyed independently.

That is why this movie is so beautiful. Her choice to embrace the heartaches to come, in self sacrifice for her yet unborn daughter, is so powerful. It makes you reflect on what it means to love someone, and how much you would endure for their sake. I love science fiction for stuff like this. When a good story teller is allowed licensee over reality, they can use it to magnify ideas and emotions in a way regular fiction just isn't capable of doing.

From what I understood from the film it was unavoidable for Louise's character to have to experience the pain of her daughter's death because eventually she realized all the events beginning with her first contact with the aliens to the passing of her daughter needed to happen in order to resolve the conflicts the different nations were experiencing in the present. Castello and Abbott also understood this which is why they were willing to commit to their actions even knowing the fact that one of them would die in the process.

Your reactions are something, you have always intelligent emotional reactions besides making fun comments and making us enjoy this short time with you. I have been studying how language impacts and transforms personalities according to the language you are speaking you change your personality and bear with its culture. I also study how plants react accordingly to your intentions with spoken words. This universe is a rainbow of opportunities to learn, embrace and love what we are. The language you speak, the words you write should express what you are and what you want from your life, love should be in each word you speak and write because each word your mind creates will create your life in your next minutes in life. .. much love Mary..can t wait to see your next reaction. .. The 9-11 attacks are far enough back in time that many folks have no personal memories of them Nothing captured that feeling of something momentous happening yet having no idea WHAT than the opening scenes of this film. It's hard to talk about this film without overt spoilers or at least dropping clues. That said, here goes. You mentioned re-watching this movie, which I think puts the viewer in the perspective of Louise. You already know the course it will take, so your experience of the journey is ....different... but no less engaging. This film blew me away on so many levels. It's technically dazzling - in a surprisingly low-key way, an intriguing premise brilliantly executed... and its handling of 'alien-ness' .... is so well done. Some folks may argue for films like 2001 and Contact as ultimate 'First Contact' movies, but for me, nothing beats Arrival. (Although I loved Contact and would recommend it - even though it's a far more conventional story structure) I think what makes films like this so impressive is that while they are technically 'Sci-Fi' they are more about the human experience of the participants, so they resonate far more strongly. ....just one opinion.... (shrug) Thanks for sharing this. The next best thing to experiencing it the first time, is 'riding along' with someone else's first watch.

I think the moment when Ian explains the zero-sum concept, and then Louise gives it to Hannah, is the moment when she starts changing her future if not the future of the world. Then at the end of the movie when there were a bunch of flashes forward of them being together and raising Hannah together overrules the introduction. That's my theory anyway.

An interesting thing is that a lot of people interpret Louise's decision as very selfish, but I never saw it that way. My reasons for not doing it has nothing to do with selflessness, it would just be too hard.

I read the short story as my mom was dying of ALS. I saw the movie after she passed. In the course of taking care of her I kind of did the reverse of what her mom did. So as her mom helped her take her first steps, I helped her as she took her last. In the book her daughter makes it to 25 before she dies in a hiking accident. They had her daughter die earlier in the film because even at 16 or so Amy Adams with her dying daughter is a bit of a reach in terms of how young she looks. I like the film; I like that she's with her daughter at the end - even if I did sob in the cinema for that part. I've seen debate about the ethics of Louise having her daughter even though he knew the end. Ian seemed to be in that camp. But the reality is that every parent is making that choice. We all die. That most of us die before our parents doesn't make their decision more ethical. What matters is the time we have together. For all of us our time is finite. Some finites are bigger than others but regardless there's a beginning and an end. Life happens in between. Endings are hard. They are to be mourned. But endings shouldn't stop us from living. From making our connections in the time we have. At least that's what I took from it.

The only positive alien contact films I can think of are ET: The Extraterrestrial & Contact. If the other Arrival film is what I'm thinking of, it's about humanoid invaders masquerading as humans. I'm sure someone has already told you, but this film was based on the greatest science-fiction short-story of the late 20th century, Ted Chiang's "Story of Your Life." The story is even better (and even more heartbreaking) than the film. As to your question about making the choice to have the baby even though she knows what will happen to it -- time-travel stories allow us to face head-on the fact that we all know: that *all* love stories end in sorrow, that the lovers must inevitably be parted, and that every honest person enters into love knowing that it will end in heartbreak. This is the price we pay for loving, the price we pay for living with hearts and minds. Louise simply has to face it more directly than most of us; she can't hide it from herself the way we can. Chiang's point is, we shouldn't hide it from ourselves either. (In this dimension, also see the novel The Time Traveler's Wife.) As to your question about reliving memories: as is made clear in the Chiang story, the Heptapods don't conceive of any difference between past, present, and future. To them, it's all one fixed continuum; they already know what they're going to do their whole lives, they already know how they're going to die. Louise can go back and see her own birth, or she can go forward and see her own death, but it's not "going back" or "going forward" to her -- she sees all of it, all at once.

This is such a beautiful movie and like all great sci-fi movies it is actually not about the aliens or spaceships but about what it means to be human, in this case about how we deal with grief. There are three other classic alien movies I hope you will react to: Contact (1997 dir. Robert Zemeckis ('back to the future') from a book by Carl Sagan), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977 dir. Steven Spielberg) and The Andromeda Strain (1971, not the remake, dir. Robert Wise from a book by Michael Crichton ('Jurassic Park')). Non of these movies are scary but are, in order, more epic/personal story, mystery/adventure and science/thriller. They are all excellent movies.

You have to watch "Prisoners" from same director.

If you decide not to have the child, regardless of your personal reasons, that child, the child you loved unconditionally, will never exist. You erase her life from existence. All her joys, all her pains, all your love, all of it disappears. There is no easy answer.

It gives the most brutal perspective of the phrase, "It's better to love and loss, than to never have love at all." Well, are you sure???

Just a small thing, Mary. The director of this movie (and Dune) is French-Canadian, not Spanish-speaking. So his name isn't pronouned as a Spanish name, as you did it. More like "Veel-neuv"

Ian left because the daughter died and because he learned that she always did know this, but never told him, which is in my eyes very selfish from her. Even if she can handle the death of her daughter so well, not everbody can. She could at least gave him the choice and told im advance. From my point of view I can understand why he left... In a relationshiop trust is the only currency. Beside of this, its a very good film. :)

Mary you did respond the right way. You said you wouldn't have a child that would suffer and die. Louise was selfish. She _knew_ her child was going to born to suffer and die young. She knew this was wrong because she kept this knowledge from Ian instead of telling him ahead of time and giving him a choice. Louise wanted to do what she wanted to do, no matter who suffered. She gave no one else a choice. How many lies did she tell her child? How many times did she lie when Hannah talked about her future, one Louise knew would never happen? No wonder Louise had dating problems and no wonder Ian divorced her and no wonder it appears their divorce was not amicable. Louise is a selfish POS.

Max Richter is a genius. Best composer alive. Check his work in HBO masterful series The Leftovers. Incredible stuff

The composer is Max Richter, not Max Ritcher. You should also watch Bladerunner 2049 by Denis Villeneuve (also 's' in Denis is silent, since he's a french Canadian. All those names yeah? 😃), if you hadn't already. Another kind of movie, still great though. Love your reaction, almost cried in the end ❤

When you expect an alien movie and you get a human story. Shame we have to wait 3000 years for the sequel.

An interstellar ship arrives on earth and the human military thinks their weapons will actually harm them? You got to love humans thinking that. Another good film to watch is Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

If you think it is hard to "endure" the love/marriage/birth because you know the death is coming... remember that the the Heptapods knew Abbott would die before they even came. You know the end, before the beginning even starts. She see time, and knows that "it is better to have loved and lost" so she goes forward to what she knows is worth having. Edit: "The Arrival" is nothing like this movie, which is just "Arrival" that one... I didn't like and is more of just a standard "sci-fi aliens are coming" movie where this one is... epic.

To truly understand this, you need to reconsider how we view time. You're assuming time is linear: past then present then future. But really time is non linear, and all exist at the same time. That always messes with my head because it means one if the following is true: 1) Everthing is deterministic so we don't have free will 2) We still have free will, but there must be an infinite multiverse to accomodate every possible action anyone takes
