Arrival of Vulcan XM597 at East Fortune, 1984.

8mm colour cine film with sound by Robert Wilson and Harry Westwood of Avro Vulcan XM597 arriving into East Fortune Airfield on 12th April 1984.
It was delivered out of active service by the RAF from RAF Waddington.
I’m not sure if the pilot wasn’t happy with the first landing, or was showing off to the crowd... perhaps the latter! The 4x Rolls Royce Olympus spool up and he goes around again.
This aircraft took part in the Falklands War, bombing Argentine Radar positions. It was forced to divert to Brazil due to a broken refuelling probe and was interned for the rest of the Falklands War.
XM597 is now part of the National Museum of Flight Scotland at East Fortune.

I was there, aged 5. Subsequently spent my student holidays working at the Museum of Flight, helping to repaint the airframe and doing guided tours of the cockpit during the Museum’s special event days.

So great to see this film. My uncle (who passed away in 2020) went to see it landing. Wish I could have been there, the Vulcan is such a beautiful aircraft.

I did see one flying at Leuchars air show a few years ago. Hell of a roar from those Olympus gas turbines! I was only a toddler when this was filmed in 1984 but great to have it on film 👍

My recollection is that the first approach was a planned low approach and go around to assess the conditions and if the crew were happy the second one was to be a landing. When the Comet arrived in September 1981 the whole length of the runway was available but by the time the Vulcan arrived the mini roundabout giving access to the Sunday Market had been built on the west end of the runway shortening the available landing distance by about 300metres

Good info to know. Possibly that’s why they used the drogue parachute on landing too.
