This show violates the Twilight Zone rule. which says you're allowed one major suspension of disbelief plot device per episode. Any plot twists and turns after that must be traced back as logical consequences of that first one. Good writers will start with one such device and then get where they want to be by building on that, not by adding one random/improbable thing on top of another.

They left the discovery of … I don’t know, 150 million _other_ types of aliens until the very end. But it’s good, they all like us and want to be friends. Ian maybe was going to stab Nico in the back, but never got that chance if so. In that scene, Ian moved in looking like he was about to attack Nico... whether he was going to attack her or just wanted to save some face by proving to her that he COULD take her out if he wanted ... is never known as Nico did not take any chances upon seeing him looking menacing, and immediately ended him in case he WAS about to try to kill her. This serves to demonstrate how important it would be in any such future mission that professionals be selected to crew the flight rather than recruiting a random dysfunctional CW drama level parody of a crew.
