'Arrogant elites' criticise football fans for 'daring to hold different views'

Spiked Editor Brendan O’Neill says the woke elites are so arrogant they believe “everyone must conform to their way of thinking” and don’t understand their political ideology is not shared by the masses.
His comment comes after football fans in the UK have been labelled racist for booing football players taking a knee supporting Black Lives Matter at the weekend.
“These fans, who are mainly fans of Millwall, I think they’re just sick and tired of football having been hijacked by the Black Lives Matter ideology.
Mr O’Neill said it was important to remember booing Black Lives Matter was not the same as "booing black people".
“Black Lives Matter is an ideological movement, it’s a divisive movement, it’s anti-family, it’s anti-police, it pushes critical race theory which essentially says all white people are racist and all black people are victims.
“This is an ideology that people are perfectly entitled, and in my view, quite wise, to oppose.”
He told Sky News host Rita Panahi the reaction from the media and the “chattering classes” was “absolutely hysterical” because it indicates they cannot believe there are people who disagree with them.
“I think the arrogance of the woke elites is now through the roof to such an extent that they think everyone must conform their way of thinking,” he said.
“This incident, even though it’s quite minor in the scheme of things, has illustrated how much of a divide there is between the elites and ordinary people, and I think that divide is going to get larger and larger.”

I'm all for no abuse in football but it has to be equal. All footballers get verbal abuse but the only time it's punished is if it's against someone of colour. My best example would be Granit Xhaka, when he was captain for Arsenal he had a few bad games and the fans turned on him, they threatened to kill him and his wife and wished his 3 year old daughter would get cancer. He understandably got upset and lashed out not violently but he lost his captaincy and had to apologise for his actions. No action was taken against the fans and it was all forgotten. A few month ago a fan made a monkey gesture towards Rio Ferdinand and he was arrested and probably will get a lifetime ban from watching any further games. How is someone making a gesture worse than hundreds of your own supporters making actual threats of violence and wishing such a horrible disease on an innocent child? All footballers should be protected from abuse no matter what colour their skin is.
