Arrogate wins the Breeders' Cup Classic from California Chrome

What a race! Rising star Arrogate beats the much-loved California Chrome in a memorable battle at Santa Anita Park in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Classic.
The highlight of the 2016 Breeders Cup, the anticipation of the clash between Arrogate and California Chrome may have been high but the main event didn't disappoint - California Chrome was brave, but the young gun Arrogate followed up a sensational victory in the Travers Stakes to triumph on the biggest of stages.

Espinoza kept looking back for a legit reason, he knew Arrogate was a freakish 3yo colt, and Arrogate proved as much. Chrome ran his heart out like the champ he is, just met up with a superior beast.

I'm surprised Arrogate didn't have a heart attack. You know for sure BB didn't let Arrogate run "clean". Not against Chrome. Chrome made him work HARD for that win. And Chrome won all but that ONE race that year due to CC traveled abroad to win the Dubai World Cup and a prep race in Dubai and then came home with not much time off to go right back to work. Was a great race. RIP Arrogate. Great son of Unbridled's Song who passed away WAY too early for the pedigree he came from. AND from the abuse his human's put upon him, such a fine TB who could run better without any drugs. We'll never know now how great Arrogate could have become. He went way to early after only a year of running. They used him up and it was too much.

Mike Smith timed it perfectly. California Chrome had no time to react. It was the only way to beat Chrome. Chrome is a great horse, with a huge heart. If he knew Arrogate was coming he would have fought on. But Smith timed it perfectly. 2 great horses. Arrogate is special. Has the acceleration of Secretariat. Cant wait to see Arrogate next year.

Wow, I love this race, one of my all time favs.. California Chrome was in beast mode (Timeform 138 mode!) and Arrogate somehow entered King Kong mode (Timeform 139) and wore him down.. has this ever been done before?? An exceptional horse wearing down another outstanding horse, who also ran to his best?? I'm not sure it has.. certainly not to this level.. and that's what makes it so legendary.. especially on the back of what they achieved previously (Arrogate in the Travers and Chrome in the Pacific Classic, not to mention Frosted in the Met Mile.. and form franked by Beholder in the Distaff.. Wow, just wow!!)

I like deep stretch runner Exceller (barely) beating Seattle Slew in the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup, after Slew had been challenged for the lead early on by Affirmed in very fast fractions. Some, maybe many, people rank it Slew's best race, even though he lost.

There were a couple of times during this race when Chrome didn't look totally comfortable. Took a bit longer for him to change leads at two different points and then into the turn when Espinoza looked back. That being said, the separation between the top two and the rest of the field at the wire speaks to how phenomenal both of these horses are. Chrome ran his race. It took a monumental effort from Arrogate with a late final surge to get up on the wire for the win. Chrome is a first-ballot HOF when he becomes eligible, and Arrogate just continues to impress in limited starts. Onward and upward. A fitting end to a very exciting BC 2016.

Yeah yeah yeah.... you have to feel pretty stupid now.... how do you explain the Dubai World Cup???? Were all those horses "uncomfortable" as well??? And what about the Travers?? I have never seen anyone run the Travers as fast as Arrogate did.. and to be perfectly blunt...at his very best, Chrome NEVER ran a mile and a quarter as fast as Arrogate did. If the World Cup didn't convince you of Arrogate's greatness... then you're blind.

Because Victor was holding Chrome back. He never did that. When CC wanted to go...he let him..so that confused Chrome. This was what Victor said after the race the next day. We could see it happen anyway.....was wierd to see him holding CC back right when CC himself wanted to boot it coming around that last turn as he always did. Was taught to do.

If you see this race and you see Arcangelo’s Peter Pan win that took him to the Belmont win that took him to the travers win you can see this pedigree stuff is not a lie. This race shows one of the most sensational bursts of speed you’ll ever see in the very last part of a race vs the DOG of a horse that was Chrome. Arcangelo found something very similar to beat bishop’s bay after he looked beat in the Peter Pan. Can’t wait to see Arcangelo vs. probably Geux Rocket ride battling out a race like this later on this year. Good finish to an otherwise dull 2023 horse racing season.

@@boxcarent.3147 No chance, he just thought he had him cooked, then Chrome gave him 5 lengths+ that most other horses couldn't give you (Chrome is Timeform 138) and Still Arrogate (139+) ran him down, it was extraordinary to witness, like one of those old Classics from a bygone era.. We just don't see this much nowadays, for me this was the highest level battle between two thoroughbreds in modern times.

He proved that with his record breaking Travers, annihilation in the Pegasus, and extraordinary last to first in Dubai. Arrogate was better than Chrome. Infact, must be one of the best horses to ever race in America, easily capable of living the best we've ever seen.

Arrogate earned a 120 Beyer for his BCC triumph, same as American Pharoah earned last year at Keenland. Arrogate is the first in years to earn back-to-back 120+ Beyer speed scores in US(122 at Travers win).

Great race. I think the horses are very closely matched but better riding tactics won the day. I will be having a sizeable bet on Chrome in the rematch. My concern is that Arrogate may show further improvement. Then my money is lost. At 7/4 I will take that chance.

Arrogate had no business winning that race the way it was run. The first half was run in very comfortable fractions. He was still able to out-kick a more mature, older horse. Chrome ran a career-best but still couldn't beat him. Arrogate is very, very special. If he stays sound, there is no telling how good he could be. He's only a baby.

Frosted earned his way into this race. Unfortunately for him it was held at Santa Anita and not a New York track where he probably would have given a better representation of himself. Nonetheless, the best 2 horses ran 1-2 and probably would have done the same at almost any other track.

Fix, you can tell by the body langue of the trainer when he was celebrating the win , he knew it was a done deal him and the woman in the green dress were celebrating the win he showed very little emotion , he may take some acting lessons to make it look more realistic next time, all the yanks got stuffed with this result, yes sir lost all your 50 and 100 dollar bills to win 30 or 60 bucks ,at 3/5 ,yee all have a nice day now. There is no doubt they were both exceptional racehorses - head and shoulders above their peers - I think Arrogate went on to become unbeatable after this race - in this race though he should have been beaten - he won because California Chrome couldn’t see him coming and by the time he had - the race was over. Which is a shame as there is no doubt Arrogate was a superstar horse but so was California Chrome.
