Chris jT - Namco’s System 22 arcade hardware which powered 1993’s Ridge Racer, 1994’s RR2 and 1995’s Rave Racer, had a bunch of DSPs and texture mapping & shading chips from Evans & Sutherland. E&S has all kinds of 3D workstations and image generators for flight military combat simulators. Namco worked with them in 1993 The “TR3” chipset un System 22 had 400 GFlops of processing power and a lot more memory. For comparison, the N64 had 100 GFlops in 1996. The PS1 did not work with floating point math, so even less comparable. Not only that, but even the fasted PC 3D accelerator cards of 96/97, like 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics and NEC-VideoLogic PowerVR, weren’t able to match System 22 performance in practice. The original PlayStation was not even remotely close to this. PS1 hardware made a nice low cost arcade board (System 11) that allowed near perfect ports of Tekken, T2, Soul Edge and other games to home. Like how Sega’s Model 2 and Model 3 boards had texture mapping chips from Martin Marietta and GPUs from Lockheed Martin’s Real3D computer systems division / spinoff company.

because shitty game devs like to call their undeveloped or oversimplified game mechanics "arcadey" to try to make people judge them less harshly. For example, somebody would look at that crappy ridge racer draw and drift game and call it arcadey because it has lots of bombastic announcer voiceovers and oversimplified "racing"

I appreciate that there where variances of route and time in the single course. But I'm curious, was it time constraints that prevented devs from adding more course variety? That, or the difficulty in creating courses with the brand-new tools of the time? (This is an updated 1992 arcade game btw.)

Although I never had the chance to try out this game myself, I don't think there was a view change button until Rave Racer. There are quite a few videos of the first two games on the arcade cabinet and I haven't ever seen a different view. Also, the Rave Racer flyer specifically mentions the view change, which isn't stated about the first two games. flyers.arcade-museum.com/flyers_video/namco/21201301.jpg
