Arrow making process | Blacksmith | How to make traditional arrows
Hello friends,
through this video you will see how an arrow is made. This is an Indian traditional arrow. Tribal (Santhal) people in India use it as their main weapon, as well as it is also used for hunting.

His skill in drawing out the tapered tang in round section is noteworthy

A great example of understanding the timeless fundamental aspects of forging. The grinder was a disappointment. Such forging skill would sit better with hand filing. I hate filing but it is often the best route.

This is mounted inside a wood arrow shaft I presume? I imagine the shaft will shatter on impact. Perhaps that is intended? Though it seems a waste of materials. Good black smith skills! 👍

Same as strong you bind the schaft around the tang with sinue and glue

Typically these long tanged arrows go into bamboo or cane shafts. They are set in hide glue or a resin and bound in sinew or rattan fiber. They become very tough. There is usually a step behind the head to stop the point from being forced into the tubular shaft and splitting it. Here, it’s less defined, but I think the twisted section does the job.

I mean there's nothing traditional about this, but your skill is extraordinary. I think you could let your craftsmanship speak for itself without lofty titles.

No judgement just an observation, I was taught to hit from the end inwards to draw out a piece to keep the metal from mushrooming at the end. It doesn't look like you did though! Plus nice work using the inside of the tongs for a twist!

This is the war arrow head, its purpose is to cause as much damage as possible to the enemy. Only this arrowhead is too big and too heavy, it would be more useful as a spear!

Not as pleasing to the eye, or durable, but arrowheads can be made with old cans using tin snips and pliers. They're single use, though. They tend to self destruct after hitting something, which makes for NASTY wound damage.

Huge waste of time. A bobskin arrow "head" would just be pound into a point and break it off and use whats left of the material too make another. This is too big to be a arrow? Maybe for a harpoon.

So this would not actually function as an arrow, it’s too heavy and the metal wouldn’t be flexible enough. That’s why it’s an arrowHEAD.

As someone that has forged countless things both blade and tool alike, i have to say that the way the bevels on the head tie into the twist beautifully. This appears to be mild steel so with a shaft that thin, flexibility probably wouldnt be too much of an issue, however, 2 key components are absent to be considered an arrow. 1. aerodynamics which would be the result of the fletching combined with arrowhead symmetry which the tines were slighty off. 2. There was no nock forged in so unless a grooved cap was fitted on the end of the shaft, there was no way to reliably affix it to a bowstring. Overall i like the video as well as the build, just a couple of details i noticed that could be easily improved upon to sucessfully turn it into a fairly functional arrow
