Arrowhead Towne Center has a rich history that dates back to its opening in October 1993. It was developed on land that was formerly an orange grove, located at Bell Road and 75th Avenue in Glendale, Arizona. The mall was a joint venture between Westcor and General Growth Properties, with Westcor owning a two-thirds share and managing the mall, while General Growth Properties owned a one-third share.
The mall was originally anchored by department stores such as Robinsons-May, Montgomery Ward, JCPenney, Dillard’s, and had an empty anchor pad that was not yet leased. Over the years, the mall has undergone several changes in ownership and tenant composition. For instance, Montgomery Ward closed down in December 2000, and Sears took over the space in spring 2002. In 2006, Macy’s acquired Robinsons-May and converted the Arrowhead store into a Macy’s.
Since about 2007, Arrowhead Towne Center has been transitioning to cater to a more affluent and upscale shopper, adding high-end stores like Sephora, Swarovski, Coach, and the West Valley’s first Apple Store. The mall has also seen changes to adapt to the evolving retail landscape, such as the replacement of Mervyn’s with Forever 21 in 2009.
In 2016, Macerich sold 40% of the mall to GIC Private Limited, reflecting the mall’s continued importance as a retail destination. The mall’s history reflects the growth and development of the northwest Valley and continues to be a central shopping and entertainment hub for the region.
