MusicWorks - Grade 3
This impressive work by Samuel Hazo begins and ends with a unifying dramatic and powerful fanfare theme. In contrast, the middle section is built around faster and modern-sounding rhythms and harmonies, while incorporating traditional melodies (including a hint of Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring) lending a unique and timeless quality to the music. Commissioned as a tribute from one band director to his predecessor, this is a rewarding and effective work for today's bands.

I'm currently a senior in high school playing the trombone in the concert band. When I was a freshman we were going to play this song for our spring concert in April, but COVID hit just before we could. Because this song was a band favorite and the seniors missed their last concert, everyone was unhappy and frustrated. When we found out that we couldn't even play normally for the rest of the year, and the year after that, it was an even more painful hit. The band lost members after that year and many of our underclassmen in the years that followed missed out on two years of normal band and it was difficult to catch them up. However, three years later our band is stronger than ever. Our underclassmen made up for the years lost and I'm happy to say that we are back on track. As a celebration, we chose this song for our Spring conert in April this year, my final year, after not being able to play it my first year. Band was the most fun I've had at school, with all my skilled peers and influential teachers I'm so happy to finish it off with what I think is the best song we've ever played. Thank you to all teachers who never stopped trying to keep music alive and thank you to all the players who kept playing even when times were at their toughest. Thank you to Samuel R. Hazo for arranging this piece, and to the Hal Leonard Concert Band for putting it all together on KZbin. I will be leaving behind a fantastic band, but I'm certain that what I'm leaving behind will continue to improve and produce wonderful music.

I'm playing this song I'm my High school band for a school concert 3 years later and this song still lives in my head rent free. God I can still remember playing those trills on the flute 4 years later, it's my senior year, I might ask if we can play this again

Absolutely beautiful. I love the intensity, while still keeping it majestic. The kind of music you would play in a movie like Lord of the Rings. Strong, noble, and absolutely perfect.

I have returned once again, and discovered this beauty. It still stands strong, and is compounded by my experiences with Ghost of Tsushima and with my recent fascination with anime. Absolutely perfect background music for slaying Mongols.

I'd say it's got more Harry Potter tones than Lord of The Rings. Lord of The Rings (outside of Concerning Hobbits) is a very dramatic piece with focuses on the marching highs and lows that compound together, while Harry Potter has that more moving and flowing score to it that feels best described as a "magical" tone

I’m so happy I get to play this, Shenandoah, and rhythm of the winds for my senior year. We finally get to do a lot of hard music for our concert band. The past years, we did grade 2-3 music so I’m so excited to finally play some “difficult” music (we’ve looked/played these before and I didn’t have much difficulty). Played arrows my freshman year (first time being put on 1st flute), and I played rhythm last year. We were supposed to do Shenandoah but people kept complaining about it. Anyway, I’m a hardcore flute/piccolo player✌🏻

My first thought as well, I've been listen to a lot of the Hazo stuff and he just seems to write for chimes as most composers would write for bells, with actual melodies and moving notes. Normally it seems, if you play chimes, just expect to play a whole note when the band hits a chord.
