It definitely can affect your performance. No it’s not just food. You can’t have any fluids! Look how many players have water breaks and energy drinks before and during games. When you’re fasting, you can’t do any of that until you break your fast which would have been after the game, cos the current time to break fast is nearly 8pm right now! You go play a high-intensity football game with no food or fluids of any sort since 4am. NOTHING can pass your lips, no water, food, medication, nothing! I’m not even saying that excuses Salah’s performances but don’t downplay fasting like it’s easy, cos it’s not!
