I remember seeing this game at a Sack n Save in Waco, Texas back in the 90s. I used to play it while my parents were doing the shopping. The location where it used to be is now Hobby Lobby.

Love all the details in this game, especially the battle damage shown on characters. We will never see anything like this in most modern fighters. Although Dead or Alive 6 had a little battle damage. The soundtrack to the Neo Geo CD version of this game is fantastic. I listen to it often.

Face damage; panting pose in low health (standing pose changes); some chars get clothes ripped when beaten with specials; special ko animations (crumple in some cases, and something different for others). That should have become THE universal standard for fgs since AOF2. It was perfectly doable as 90s games had no big roster sequels, they were built with usually small additions over the yearly sequels. Like SSF2 added 4 new chars. SFA2 added 4 chars. And so on. That's not hard to manage. And of course, if that's hard to forgive in the 90s, let's not talking about modern fgs that are all in 3d. All recent 2d fgs like SF, KoF, SS, GG, etc, should have those details.

That should have become THE universal standard for fgs since AOF2. It was perfectly doable as 90s games had no big roster sequels, they were built with usually small additions over the yearly sequels. Even KoF, the fg with the biggest roster in the 90s, was growing with over 5 new chars added per sequel. So that's not hard to manage - making those details for this amount of chars.

So even in the 90s 2d fgs that is hard to forgive. Now let's not even talk about the modern era where it's all 3d graphics. Truly Capcom, SNK, Arcays, are all slacking too much to really push the genre forward technologically. It might just look hard to believe for someone with little fg culture, but it's just a fact. AOF1 and 2 are from 92 and 94... So there's NO excuse for late 90s and early 00s fgs, and much less for modern fgs. I think only MK has body damage, and SC has clothes damage. The whole fg genre is still not willing to go that path sadly. I guess It's just that 2d fgs became miraculously popular again thanks to SF4, and fans are too satisfied with the situation. It's an almost literal case of "beggars can't be choosers".

I'd love to see an alternate timeline in which Art of Fighting's gameplay was actually fun and enjoyable, so the game became a hit and the fighting genre's standard. Everything else it tried was so ambitious and interesting, but they blew it when it came to how the game actually feels to play. AoF2 was the last of the clunky SNK fighters, they started improving on that from this point onward.

What a character development for a fighting game sequel. And overall AOF has a notable sense of narrative since the first one, even though it's not an elaborate or deep story or such. But anyways it's remarkably better done than most fg story modes before AND after it. It's a shame that AOF wasnt well aknowledged since the beginning because of the controversy over it taking from SF. It has a lot of contributions to the genre, innovations, and other positive points (I admit though, outside the gameplay which is rough).

I miss this Yuri. KoF Yuri isn't the same, especially since the awful KoF13 re-design. It's especially disappointing that she didn't make it into the beautifully animated AoF3, except as a story sidekick who gets bodied as soon as she tries to fight. That's more than King or Takuma got though. What the hell was the AoF team thinking taking out so many popular characters from a franchise with a shortage of popular characters? So much wasted potential.
