Explained expertly. Using your body's natural armor i.e areas of thick muscle mass to take hits is extremely important. You don't want to get hit but you do want to be able to take it of you do. And no big muscles don't mean you're invincible. It's the structure and relaxation that's key. Love this. Great work

I love Guru Maul silat, so seamless and look effortless yet effective & deadly. When I was a child, it never came to my mind that Brunei has a quality silat. When I grow up and I learn that in the past Brunei Kingdom was way larger than its present size. And it makes sense that to conquer big land area you must have quality combat technique (and also other factors like strategy, strength etc). What Guru Maul possesses and shows is perhaps the reminiscence of the old glorious Brunei Kingdom. Much respect !

@Ymirson999
@Ymirson999 8 жыл бұрын
I'm certainly no master in Silat, but I did train in it for a while, and I think it would take longer than most. If you trained seriously in muay Thai for six months, you could undoubtedly use it to defend yourself, but Silat would take longer. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but there's a wider range of training in Silat.  Weapons, ground work, etc., and quite honestly, while complexity is usually to be eschewed in martial arts, Silat is rather complex in some of its moves. I would also suggest it's something you should start at a younger age. The range of motion in the moves can be challenging for someone older.
@ArumesYT
@ArumesYT 8 жыл бұрын
You can look at it from a different direction. Because Pencak Silat is such a complex style with a wide variety of moves, there are plenty of moves to choose from for any body type. Just pick the moves that suit your body type best. You don't have to master every aspect of Silat to be a good fighter.

Having trained Silat, I know first hand that it is effective and pragmatic. So may principles he talks about are key to all the arts, body structure, wholeness of body movements, effective range etc are all very real and a high level of experience. With this in mind I would like to point out that in reality there is only one moment. Your split second is shared with the other. If the opponent is anywhere near your level, you each get the same one split second. So then we don’t get four movements for the others one. I’m sure the teacher knows this, but observers will misinterpret the static demonstration. South east MA often have a 3 strikes in one time philosophy. But still the split second is just one.

@@tlcem075 Those pauses only exist for demonstration of the technique. The master stops the movement at a point to show you that point. If you're watching this video, I'm seeing him stop at the joint locks - and that's honestly polite terminology. He's really stopping at the point where you destroy the joint and rip bones out of their supporting soft tissue. We often forget these are martial arts. They're military techniques used to help you kill other people. We don't always treat it with that level of respect because of the way martial arts are often taught in the US: for a good workout, highly sanitized for kids, or for sport. When we study an art that honestly doesn't have any of that like silat, we're back to learning how to maim or kill people. And if you want to practice those techniques, you need to know how to protect your training partner so you can both show up at the next practice without injury to train.

Most silat training is live action role playing against compliant opponents. I trained extensively all throughout Indonesia between 1974 and 1982 - culminating in taking Gold at the inaugural World Silat Championships in Jakarta. The only athletes that made it past the first round, were one that did bagwork, roadwork and daily sparring - the rest were wiped out with little to no ceremony.

Ive fought in the silat tournament circuit for 3 years during my college years. Ive passed that phase in my martial arts journey. Im 45 years old now, if you have trained extensively in Indonesia then you would understand there is no career future past being a silat athlete. Now I teach civilians and law enforcement in 4 different continents role playing against compliant opponent and I train 60 students a week. None of the champion athletes that wiped out everyone in the first round had any future in the sport past their peak age. Those who "role play" on the other hand is doing just fine.

Actually it because you met a teacher. Not old native fighter. Here in my country the old people are restricted themself to teach the ultimate movement to their silat student who is beginer or intermediate. They only teach the lethal deadly move (which is real) to person who need it on actual master of combatan. And it was same to the teacher. They teach you the silat version of self defence. Because core of silat is to defense against do or die condition. But to attack back lethaly it will go on more more advance level.

@freaker126

Maui already said, if he's gonna fight a guy with mma or boxing he will train for mma or boxing. This guy also trains in aikido. His silat is not MMA. Don't be an idiot. Even if he wants to fight an MMA guy, you think he wants to follow the rules of MMA? That's stupid. This is real-life wartime silat. Why don't you go and find a silat guy in the street and fight him? The first thing a real silat fighter will do in a street fight is going for your weakness. Break your legs, your wrist, your arms, your knees or your fckin face. That's the real martial art. Not, fighting with rules. Rules are for little kids playing games.

For those who say the martial arts he is teaching might be Bullshit, just understand this; this man is teaching concepts and possible scenarios on how to deal with an attacker when a similar situation occurs. Every martial art has concepts and theories on how to deal with an opponent; even in Muay Thai and Brazillian Jiu-jitsu, its all in the matter of understanding what move can be used when. Practice and application are what differentiates a martial art from being "usable" or not. Want an Example? Anderson Silva uses Wing Chun other traditional martial art concepts and techniques in his fights. Don't be so fixated on the concept of MMA as is where most people usually judge martial prowess on, Ultimately you need to understand that anything can be used anywhere.

I think chin exposed is dangerous. But not sure if it's the martial art nature like a trap. Automatically will puch or do a chop on the wrist when someone attacks. In my case, my hand would hit the inner part of the elbow to disable it. The more accurate the attacker to hit the chin the more the technique is executed.
