Having re-read this book in preparation for our Sleeping Beauty podcast, I have one caveat to add. The book sets up the combination of Disney's Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent pretty well. It starts with telling of the fairytale's origins and all the changes/iterations that were made over the years. That being said, the book then focused on Disney's two iterations of the fairy tale, namely Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent. So...even though I'm not a huge fan of the plot line of Maleficent, I guess I can somewhat appreciate it for being yet another iteration of the fairytale. At least we didn't get the version of the story where Phillip's mother was actually an OGRE! Haha! So I shouldn't complain. ;)

Don't Worry I love your comment, I thought I was the only one to think that way about Maleficent. Plus, not only does Maleficent give more depht to the original Sleeping Beauty, but develops Aurora's character (wich was criticized as the most empty Disney Princesses, you can verify this on Wikipedia) adding more experience, personality amd background to her character - she's curious about her surroundings, does *NOT* wait for a soulmate to make her a housewife or an oven for babies, but instead has different relationships with many characters (unlike her animated counterpart) and speaks for herself! I don't understand all the hate towards this live action... I love the original Disney movie, it's one of my favorites from the studio's classics, but I think of Maleficent as an interesting new point of view.

The fact that this is the only "Art Book" for Sleeping Beauty that is out makes it a must have for me though I agree with you guys about the ending. Maleficent was a 3.5 for me and it shouldn't be canon to Sleeping Beauty I mean it is LA!! To bad there aren't art books from the 50's with Walt's perspective :(

I agree with you guys wholeheartedly when it comes to them changing the Disney cannon. You don't do that. ESPECIALLY when it's the movie that literally saved Disney from near bankruptcy. No. I disliked Maleficent so much for that...among other things. But whole other rant. Anyways, thanks for this review. I was on the fence about this book and well...now I'm off it.

I actually mistook this review for the Art of Beauty and the Beast. XD But this was a good review for the Sleeping Beauty film too. I'm sure what I have to say about the film Maleficent but I can say this, I liked her more as a bad guy than a sympathetic anti-hero.

I'm praying for Disney to do a new art book for the movie's 60th birthday. There is sooo much more artwork they could have included. I wanted this book a lot but I didn't like Maleficent so I'm not buying it just for half of the book.

Great review! I haven't seen Maleficent yet but I have a feeling I would feel the same way about the art book combining the 2 even if I loved the latter. I love these art book reviews.

I have to agree with you on Maleficent. My main problem with Maleficent, along with Oz the great and Powerful is it seems to be Disney riding on the coat tails of Wicked.

This book looks good, I`ll have to pick it up (at least for the sleeping beauty history) I liked Maleficent a lot, beautiful film, but I don`t like that they changed so much. I think Maleficent is a good enough film to stand alone, but it is suppose to be connected to Sleeping Beauty, and it just doesn`t work, when watching it as an extended story. Some of my favorite pages would probably be the ones with Maleficent`s concept designs (from the sleeping beauty part) I agree, I think it would have been better as 2 separate books, that way they could put more in to the sleeping beauty part. Great review! :)
