It's between .45 ACP and 9x19mm. 45 is kinda obsolete in self defense situations because you can get a similar effect with 9x19 while getting more capacity and less recoil. The .40 Smith&Wesson is just a 9x19 that's a little bit more spicy. More recoil. Less capacity. No real ballistic benefits compared to what you can get out of 9x19
