The path-breaking art - and riveting story - of legendary painter, Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906). Ravi Varma expert, Rupika Chawla, gives fascinating insights into some of the artist's most important works. Ravi Varma was the first Indian artist to paint Hindu deities in a 'realistic' manner using oil paints. His paintings of Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati and scenes from the scriptures have captured the visual imagination of India for decades. He is also famous for his paintings of royalty and the rich with fine detailing of clothing, jewellery and expressions. Rupika Chawla is on Art Talk with Jujhar Singh (NewsX channel).
Art Talk is the leading arts show on Indian news television. The show carries interview - demonstrations with the top musicians, dancers, artists and photographers of the country - and the best emerging talent as well. The aim of the show is to demystify the arts, particularly the classical and fine arts, and show how beautiful, exciting and spiritual they are.

Dear Group please look into the act of Suhasini Maniratnam who has done something which should never be done at the expense of our pride the great Raja Ravi Varma to generate money for her personally owned charity organisation... I copy the post i did in her site : We the people who admire adore and respect the Raja Ravi Varma the great artist are saddened by the act of greed and stupidity to make permanent calendars with make belief photographs which will soon adorn the walls or tables of homes and offices and many who have not seen and admired and appreciated the great artists original works in Trivandrum and Mysore Palace, and especially the diaspora will start believing these are the works of the great artist. I already heard a few tell me that from other south Indian community, this is so sad and whatever the cause may be .. to make money one can do a pageant or a fashion show or even make a movie and to support single women you don’t have to do this and generate perpetual revenue for one individuals charity - at the expense of the great work of great artist of all times. Creativity cannot be a mockery of greatness, and a method to make money in the name of charity forever. When accomplished actors lose opportunity they can do many things to immortalize themselves - but not do this at the expense of ordinary people’s feelings I wonder whether the famous movie makers who are creating this with actresses, would allow their movies to be copied, their creations to be recreated and to make perpetual revenue. If each one of the frames are closely looked all you see is the accessories matched not the feelings nor the reverence… that I leave to all your good judgement watch the frames dot to dot and experience that. When you hold your head on your hand its bearing the weight of your head and its tilted that’s what the artist envisaged and here we have ladies holding their head vertical And when you are telling the child here comes papa its not a dance mudra but it’s a mothers fingers pointing to the child’s father When you hold a fruit you are holding it with a feeling not like lifting a rock When you sit with emotions your leg is not all over the place its with feelings a lot of emotions And I had the creator pass a message to me that someone had done this before, and I checked they didn’t make money with that make belief and moreover, just because one murderer escaped does not justify every murderer to be pardoned and go unscathed. These expressions of mine are not with any agenda these are honest feelings as I collect the paintings reproduction which is available in the Govt. agencies and we can also print this in canvas which is sold by agencies and also online, then why do we need such make belief and Name it RECREATING RAVI VARMA PAINTINGS why why why
