To be fair the Kun and chans add a lot to a the way characters see each others and can't easily be transcribed in English unless you rewrite scenes to express how character view each other. A girl calling someone sama tells you exactly how much she admire and respect someone so if you remove that a scene where she only calls out the name of that person wouldn't convey the same information and would have to add more text that shows she admire them which could change the scene a bit too much

That's only true for people who know what a sama is to begin with. I can tell when Makoto is speaking with the principal that she is being respectful, regardless of the honorific. Even if they wanted to use honorifics to convey character, at no point do we get information to decipher them with.

@@WafflePhattdippa that’s the problem with localization to begin with. A lot of Persona 5 as a whole makes no sense if you lack the contextual information on Japan as a whole, since the game is meant to critique Japanese society especially with its collectivism mindset and antagonists that are inspired and/or direct references to real life incidents and people. Some things make sense regardless of where you come from, but a lot will seem illogical and stupid you know about Japan. That’s the problem with playing a game made by Japanese people for Japanese people, about Japanese society. It’s why the director was shocked to learn ppl outside of Japan actually liked the game. The earlier games in the series also suffer from this, it’s a game about relationships and Japanese society and culture. There’s no real way to make the series foreigner friendly, unfortunately.

The crowds entering the subway system are painted in a homogenous monochromatic palette, and you liberate festering negative emotions from a supernatural representation of those exact subways. Though I'm sure it would bring more insight, you don't have to be an expert on Japan to get the societal implications from many things in Persona. You could make a movie about an alien planet with a completely different society from anything on earth. If you write it properly, you shouldn't be surprised that humans understood the movie alongside the aliens. We could discuss how cool it was with them before they subjugated us. I just find the honorifics completely redundant in the dub, I'm sure respect and admiration can be expressed all the same using choice of words and tone.

@@WafflePhattdippa you could write a story in a way that doesn't need honorifics but this being a Japanese games it was written in a way where honorifics matter and for them to replace it would require rewriting the story more than a translation allows it imo. It would still be a coherent story but all characters would lose a little bit of characterization. Of course for the average player it's gonna go above their head but for those who understand the implications of those honorifics at least nothing is lost in translation. Let's not forget that when they brought persona to the west it was supposed to be this niche series that would mainly appeal to weebs and back in the 2000's every anime fan would know those honorifics because of fan translations of anime that would always keep those. So they kept the honorifics even in p5 because the main target audience and fans of the series at the moment of release were already familiar with those. Ultimately I think it doesn't hurt to have them. If you don't get the meaning you still can get the whole story but if you do you can appreciate the little subtleties it adds to character interaction. The way I see it it's like watching a story about a very specific discipline or line of work that comes with specific lingo. If it's well written, you can understand the story without understanding the professional lingo but for those who understand it it adds a bit more to the story. You could rewrite the story in a way that doesn't require knowledge of the profession but then you remove something for those who are in that line of work just to basically not make the average reader feel bad for lacking knowledge on that specific subject. I understand why people might prefer not having it there but to me it just feels like more would be lost than gained.

The reason they kept the honorifics (aka the kun's, chan's) and such, is not only to give respect to the game being set in Japan and such, but also to give some insight on how their language works. Even if its translated, doesn't mean we can't learn from it.
