Art Thinking and Design Thinking | GDTA Spotlight with University College Cork

At our March GDTA Spotlight session, Dr. Fiona Chambers, Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy at University College Cork, and Dr. Briony Supple, Senior Lecturer in Design Thinking Pedagogy and Praxis at University College Cork, talked about “Art thinking and design thinking in University College Cork: An innovation ‘marriage’ made in heaven.”
Design thinking and art thinking are both creative approaches to problem-solving. Design thinking is a structured approach to identifying and solving problems. It involves defining the problem, brainstorming solutions, prototyping and testing ideas, and iterating or refining the solutions until a successful outcome is achieved. Art thinking is a more open-ended approach to problem-solving that focuses on creative exploration and experimentation. Both approaches can lead to innovative solutions. At University College Cork, the dual power of both approaches is already being harnessed in innovation programs.
