I mostly learned the patterns. For example at the start if he comes at you, he'll do two quick attacks. Otherwise if he stays far, he'll either use a ranged attack or the one where he goes into the air and comes down where you are. It can be hard to recognize for sure, but it gets easier once you realize that the patterns don’t change much
