Artale Review: An Old School MapleStory server that focuses on fun

Artale is rough around the edges. There's no ignoring that fact. However, underneath its unpolished exterior lies a very enjoyable and convenient Old School MapleStory recreation that I've enjoyed far more than any other server I've ever played. The moderation issues are certainly a major issue that future servers can hopefully manage more effectively, but I still recommended checking it out if you have the time to spend on OSMS these days.

Very true. Just got to 30 the other day and went to Ludi, and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw another person on the ship from Orbis to Ludibrium and they WEREN'T a bot! I was overjoyed at what should've been a regular sight...

It was surprisingly fun. Its a great change of pace from the hyper-mobile, hyperburning pace of regular maplestory. Also loving autolooting.

I honestly think Artale is really refreshing. There are definitely pain points with the channel system and auction house going down, but tbh those are all smaller things that you can get around. The class changes and fact that it is so accessible has made it feel so much more novel but still captures that nostalgia too. Nice video!

I kind of miss those old private servers that had FM training rooms. With level 200 cap and can rebirth as a new job and keep skills/attacks from the previous job you were before

High rate servers were like a completely different game. That was a time of innovation and server owners trying lots of weird custom content. It was really fun though! Those are some of my best MapleStory memories.

Another underrated feature of Artale is the ease of access to full sp/ap resets, especially for classes that use their secondary stat

"The grind is the game" I'd be a lot more content with this if the grind involved a more varied amounts of training locations, being stuck in the same locations grinding for 20+ levels by myself wears on me real fast. I wish Artale did more to encourage party play and had a larger variety of viable maps to train in. I dropped it at lvl 64 because I was feeling burnt out and bored, but I got a lot farther than I thought I would, up until that point I did enjoy it quite a lot.

The cash shop items being tradeable is pay to win. However, this particular pay-to-win does make RWT less prevalent. It's still there, obviously. But it's not as big an issue as I'd think it would be, especially if it wasn't present. From what I can see, most players aren't interacting with the bot sites that sell gold, and are actively angry at them existing. If a player wants to buy gold, they buy from the Artale shop and sell it. That's a good thing for the health of the game.

Its hard to talk about grinding on Artale without mentioning the increased EXP rates, I feel like I spend so much time on a single level only to remember that its going about 2-3x faster than vanilla OSMS, I don't know if I can ever join a more faithful server with that kind of information. The current EXP rate feels just right while retaining the sense of accomplishment.

I cant lie i was EXTREMELY turned off by the cosmetics and aesthetic of artale right off the bat, and i still dont love what i see. But hearing the quality of life and "for fun" changes you mentioned its really tempting to suggest this game to my friends over a private server where they'll need to learn the entire game AND old school slog features. Im close to getting into artale after hearing the party buffs, features alone

I'm having a blast on Artale. We get perm NX pass for a 1 time payment. PQs are generally always populated. Which is annoying for channel snipers, but still fun to know we have a community of consistent concurrent player base. Auction house needs some work, but is a major QOL change to make upgrading gear very easy. And mesos are very easy to farm once you are past lvl 50. To those that think Artale is not a good server, please try to make your own! It's free to make it on MS worlds!

I love the adjusted exp rate and a couple of other improvements but the limit on players per channel and reports of sloppy fight sequences is a hard pass for me...I want as many random interactions as possible! I'm gonna wait a few more months for news on a potential MapleLand Global release...Artale seems like a fallback option. Do you think the server seems populated enough?

if you ask me more toxic than the bishop genesis leeching meta is the dragon knight + priest meta. nothing like barring the best possible rates by far to one single class, not even mentioning cheapest and cost effective

Agreed. At least the mage ultimates are enjoyed by 4 jobs (Bishop, IL mage, FP mage, Blaze mage). DK+priest meta only benefits 2 jobs.

its even more toxic given how much more broken dragon knight is in artale due to the balance changes, as well as getting rid of zerking which was the most skill expressive form of bossing in OSMS tied with sair ship management, and just essentially making zerking a passive that triples your damage!

I'm one of those purists that just can't get behind Artale. I do agree that some of these QoL changes are harmless though and nothing short of great ideas. Map-wide buffs are soooo good! I do hope they improve the UI and gameplay; Monster combat is horrendous and looks like you constantly have a bad connection.

Artale has become overrun with bots, multiboxers, instability, and errors. The servers only contain up to 50 people which is not enough. Please be honest with your audience as you are one of the biggest Artale spokesmen.

50 users max per channel is unbelievably lame. Back in 2006 we had hundreds of people not just in one channel, we had hundreds of people*IN ONE MAP*. You would think that modern server CPUs and equipment could outperform 2006 potato server. And obviously they do. So MS Worlds was just coded very crappily. Nexon devs today couldn't wipe the discarded underwear of Wizet devs in 2006. I tried Artale but it felt like an empty private server rather than real GMS. There are lots and lots of maps and just 50 people in the entire channel made the place feel empty. 2nd problem: huge giant asz avatars people buy and wear. I don't want to see a giant face of some random ugly guy as your avatar, taking up 5 character spaces. Why allow this garbage? It completely ruins the Maplestory feel.
