Arterial Line Set Up in the ED

How to set up a radial arterial line when in the ED. See part 2 for info on femoral arterial lines and a brief discussion on REBOA.
*Please note, when securing the transducer to the patient, in the video I implied to secure to the anterior chest wall, but we should actually be securing to the phlebostatic axis (see attached link for picture).

When I worked ICU we started our own Art lines. We used an ultrasound probe to find the artery. Our supplies were not locked and sometimes it was lots of hassle looking for things. Wow we never taped the flush to the chest

Good video, but as a matter of practice it is not a good idea to tape the transducer to the pts. chest. A better way it to get a old school foley cath strap which you can still find and strap it to the pts bicep at the level of the phlibostatic axis. This gives you a much better and accurate reading than being taped in the wrong place on the pts chest.

If I have time, sometimes I like to put a 2X2 under the transducer before I tape it down to help prevent it from digging into the pts skin. Especially if they have fragile skin.

If you tape it to the chest it's gonna be harder to pull your labs and flush the line.

For most Pyxis machines, you can have the materials department set select doors to always be unlocked. That way you don't have to log in or anything, you just walk up and open the door.
