Technically this is far harder than it sounds. What's so amazing about Rubinstein is that his technical mastery is so superb he does not seem to need to give it a second thought, but is free to devote his entire attention to matters of tempo, shading, etc. No one does these things better, in my not-so-humble opinion.

Music is an universal language. And the fantastic thing about it is that everyone can understand it, more or less, with the message intact. The only thing that differences non-musicians and musician is time; time spent face to face with the sheets and with the author. Playing music is like 'making love' (a thing that Rubinstein said himself), because you enter in intimacy with the sound, and the sound is created by your own feelings

My favorite pianist for Chopin and Mozart.

Yes indeed. He plays it really heart-felt, but also in a very natural way, he never lies or over-does anything, everything falls naturally in it´s place when he plays (or played, actually). When I hear recordings of him I often feel convinced that there´s no other way to play that what he´s playing.

My favorite is his Grand Polonaise ... which depicts nostalgia felt by someone out of his country ... or probably forced out of his country ... the way Chopin puts it is extremely well interpreted by Artur. I would play his interpretation in any event concerning memories of my country .. Sami Khoury

Artur Rubinstein was the BEST at Chopin. In the 21st Century there are technically more accomplished players, but no one has more SOUL in their interpretation of the music. Thank Heavens we have these recordings of THE MASTER at work.

Some have said that Arthur Rubinstein is the greatest artist (at least for Chopin). My father used to say that Chopin is best interpreted by Rubinstein. I believe that Rubinstein was closer in time to Chopin than today's pianists. But I would strongly reject a notion that one specific pianist is the best 1) there are good days and bad days. 2) with some composers you can not say that one pianist is playing his oevre the best. 3) Having worked for Bösendorfer and having met and listened to many pianists, I could not possibly say who is the "best". 4) I have a predilection for Russion pianists, but there are wonderful pianists all over the world who present music with enough soul. E.g. I have not heard of Hamelin until 2 years ago and I have not been to any concerts live, but it is amazing what he brings out of a music. (But he is just one of many.) If I should say who is my favorite pianist I would probably answer Sokolov. But I was a genuine fan of Gulda and of Richter. And I would not like to compare them being in a jury. The same goes for woman: Argerich, Lisitsa, and others would put me in a similar dilemma. But what I can say, is: I prefer some of the historic recordings. Somehow I hear more music in them.

+Hans Hartmann I'm glad to see someone - an expert - who condemns the use of the word BEST in place of FAVOURITE. To name some of my favourites, lately I find myself listening to two extremes : Witold Malcuzinsky about whom one rarely speaks, and a KZbin newcomer named Rachel Kwong who gives a fine performance of this Barcarolle.

well, in that list you've left out Barenboim, Ashkenazy, Volodos and Lang Lang
