I'm guessing Arthur, like a lot of people, had dysthymia, which is consistent low level depression that pervades their entire life. Listening to his music puts me in that space, bittersweet, sad, but beautiful.

The verses are C-D-G (IV - V - I). Prechorus is C-G-C-D (IV - I - IV - V). Chorus is G-em-C (I - vi- IV). The pre-verse instrumentals go between G-C. As they say, country music is 3 chords and the truth.

His music got spaced out and dark as he was dying, slowly leaving
@khlothostonney57604 жыл бұрын
@@workrelated2613 yeah i know. it was so dreadful though. honestly i cannot listen to it. i just wish he made more alternative type of records where happiness prevails before death. why do people have to document their own dying, when they can liberate themselves through joy? and what he did was his personality and i respect that. he didnt have to please anyone at all. im just sharing this from how i view it personally. I felt dread and sadness and not comfortable. Patrick Cowley went down with the most joyous sound in the world, and he was actually one of the first AIDS victims and died back in 82. But everyone is different, of course. I love and respect Arthur Russell music, but its super uncomfortable for me to listen now days!

+ZeranZeran Just a little background, when he recorded his cello work including this song he had throat cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy (he would eventually succumb to his illnesses), so I imagine he was often anemic while he continued to work and record. Once you see the lyrics you can then pick out what he's say clearly enough.
