Always value your straight-talking reviews. You influenced me to buy the A6400 a few years back, and since then, you're my most preferred source of camera and lens info. I really like how you're not shy about discussing a product's weaknesses, unlike others who only focus the good and downplay the flaws.

I'm excited that the new RX100 will be announced soon, since this camera is based on it. I adore my RX100, and I am still using the Mk3 version. When I don't want to take my A7RV/A6600/FX3 or any of my other cameras, the RX100 ALWAYS goes to the restaurant/train/plane/car/etc. Everyone should have an RX100 if you take pictures.

I have all three version of Sony Rx series (100 III, 10 iv, 1R) and I agree that the 100 has its charm, it's just so small and nice to bring everywhere, without loosing much at all too. The RX line gives different experience for each model so it'd be real shame if sony stopped making them. All three models severely need an update. And I hope sony doesn't forget us photo shooters with all these FX and ZV line releases. If they give what A7R5 have to any of the RX series model it'd immediately make them the best compact camera for their respective segments.

I had the RX100 mk3 for several years, best camera purchase I have ever made. It was with me at many parties, live gigs and made it through them all. Much more satisfied with it than my a6000 which mostly lies at home and collects ladies. However, last summer I left it outside, and it started raining so it broke. That's the only reason I bought the ZV-1 to take with me on vacation. I don't think the images are better, many images that actually feel worse than my old RX100 mk3 as it feels more unstable. Just a feeling, nothing I can prove as I haven't had them together to compare. However, the ZV-1 is better for more difficult shots where the light is poor. Video was the biggest disappointment, as everyone was talking about it being 30p, but realized after I bought it that we didn't have 30p at all in Europe with PAL but a very poor 25p which isn't good at all when you're out filming with it. So on many occasions I chose instead to make videos with my Samsung S22 Ultra which has soooo much better stabilization and much better fluid video because it has 4k 60p. When there was lower lighting than my phone could handle well, I had to run with the ZV-1 but only with 1080p 50p so that it wouldn't look bad, but you lose 4K in the process

Pretty unlikey that there is going to be an rx100 update, because this camera line replaced it. It is basically a RX100 anyway, just without the popup viewfinder/flash and a slighlty cheaper build quality.

@@Tugela60 I Disagree, in that Sony has pretty much finished their Vlogging updates and with the A6700 on the horizon, an RX100 update is in the cards. For my use case as a long form B cam, the original with the the 24-70mm f2.8 lens is just more useful in my likely use cases. The ultra wide in this new version is definitely more useful for vlogging but I wish it was constant f2.8 and had optical IS. Sony also missed a trick not adding more custom buttons/dials to this, I don't get why sony never included the lens dial they had on the RX100 which you could assign to adjust say ISO.

Biggest update for me is the USB C, the red recording ring around the screen and being able to swap batteries without removing camera from the tripod, the camera would be perfect if it was 10-70mm zoom. PS I use a Sony ZV E10 with a 10-18mm lens as my main camera, and the Sony ZV 1 ii is my B camera and EDC Camera.

The ZV-E10 is still the best value for money of all the Sony vlogging cameras. I have both ZV-E10, ZV-1, and RX100 VII. The APS-C camera is the best and most flexible video kit, especially with a smaller lens. As to the 1 inch sensor cameras I prefer the RX100 VII because it has super slo-mo record times double that of the ZV-1 and that is important to me. Getting the longer tele is often very useful as well. When I heard that the version 2 of the ZV-1 has removed the super slo-mo entirely I thought that that is a very backwards step and all the more reason to choose the RX100 VII. Product Showcase is by far the best feature of the Sony vlogging cameras, but I have that on the ZV-E10, so the ZV1 II, and the ZV-1F are never going to be on my buy list. I will, however, be looking forward to the ZV-E10 Mark 2. Maybe it will tempt me, but more likely, since the first version is already close to perfect, I will take advantage of the price drop on the first version to get a second one.

It looks like a great little camera and I'm sure Sony will sell tons of these. Hugely informative video as always Arthur. Personally, at that price I'm glad I bought the ZV-E10 instead. How many vlogging cameras does one need? I already own a Canon M50 mk i & ii, a 250D, Sony ZV-E10, HX80, HX99 and a Canon SX740 HS? The latter 3 cameras are small, pocketable, conenient and fun 1/2.5in sensor cameras. Spending double the money on a 1in sensor doesn't give me double the quality. Having arthritis in both hands and mobility issues some days I want something small and simple to use on my travels. I don't rule out buying an original ZV-1, if the prices tumble, but doubt if I would use it for vlogging with it not being wide enpough.

thanks for the comparison with apsc, however it would be more complete review if also compared to another most competitive pocket camera. for the portability yes i plan on buying this. especially i take a lot of selfies with family and friends and also regular group pictures with scenery and inside when it’s always hard to fit everyone in. what helps with this most common use case is this is the one compact camera that has by far the widest angle. pretty much all other compacts have widest zoom at 24mm vs others as 18mm for this sony! a first! iphone 14 selfie camera is only 23mm but rear camera is 13mm much wider than sony. another big reason i buy this over using iphone is when i need fill in flash.

For photography you'll be better served long term getting one of the APS-C bodies like the A6100 and pairing it with nice lenses in the future (even if you start with the kit lens for now). I have the original ZV-1 and while it does take ok photos, it's not built for it from an ergonomic standpoint (button layout mostly). And it's not a massive improvement over, say, a flagship smartphone for photos due to the smaller sensor. The ZV series should really only be considering for video shooters. I use mine as a webcam and topdown shot for review videos. Hope this helps.

Just get a used older Sony ZV-1F used for under $400. That has a superior photography lens to the new model because it's a 24-70 faster aperture at the high end of the zoom. These cameras are 1" 20MP which is fine for quick run and gun photo work. Other option is a A6xxx series like others mention but that is a bigger setup.

Optical and IBIS stabilization is best used for photography since they are designed to do small movements to compensate for vibration, and because they allow you to see behind foreground objects, potentially leading to visual distortions which are a problem in video. This used to be very noticeable in many older lenses with IS functionality when shooting video.

I mean, If you do ONLY vlog, it might be better due to the wider FoV, but apart from that, ZV-1 M1 it's still gonna give you a better image quality. So it's just subjective. It's definitely not an upgrade... I'm disappointed.

Wrong. On small cameras like this higher codec specs don't really add much. All they do is make the camera hot faster and cause it to shut off sooner. Physical stablization is pretty useless for handheld video, it needs to be active stabilization to be useable. Or a gimbal, but if you use a gimbal then camera stabilization is going to be turned off anyway. A wider field of view places constraints on lens design, that is why the f stop value falls off at longer focal lengths. You can't have it all unless you put a much bigger lens on the camera.
@dougmorato
@dougmorato Жыл бұрын
@@Tugela60 You probably don't own a ZV-1, right? Sony has a 10 bit codec that is not that heavy, intense to the camera (HAVC HS 4K), so it could be possible. But you can't deny they should've included 4K 60 8 bit! “The Standard Stabilization is not be useful for videos”, sorry but only TO YOU. It’s actually quite useful when doing slow movements. IMHO, as you can even add a bit of post stabilization, which works really well. In my experience, even on a gimbal this camera needs extra stabilization, so Gimbal + Standard Stabilization is a great combo…
@Tugela60
@Tugela60 Жыл бұрын
@MORATO I own a RX100, which is the same camera minus the pop up flash and viewfinder. The ZV-1 was launched as a cut down RX100 due to the ever increasing cost of the RX100 line putting out of affordability of the market it catered to. The solution was to remove some of the more expensive components from the system most users likely never used and release it at a lower price. Let me repeat: standard stabilization is designed to compensate for vibration while taking stills, it has little to no effect of the much larger movements relevant to video. By virtue of its design it is a small effect, for movements on the order of milliseconds. Your hand wobling is on MUCH longer timescales. Active stabilization works by using extra pixels on the sensor to keep the image stabilized. That is why you get a crop with it.
@dougmorato
@dougmorato Жыл бұрын
@@Tugela60 I complete disagree on your take about standard stabilization. The standard stabilization has some benefits over the electronic as well. For instance the lower shutter speed and in low light. So if you want to have a professional look, IBIS + Gimbal is the way. So much so ALL high end cameras have IBIS. In my opinion I’d rather have it than not. Especially considering ZV-1 takes great pictures as well.
@Tugela60
@Tugela60 Жыл бұрын
@MORATO Optical stabilization is for compensating jitters, not larger movements. It has very limited utility in video. Gimbals work by keeping the camera in the same place essentially. They will obviously complement each other since gimbals can't correct jitters. Sensor stabilization does a similar thing as a gimbal, but for somewhat smaller movements. It is not as good as a gimbal however, since the system itself is not being kept in one spot and distortions can happen as a result.

I have to disagree with your judgement that the ZV-1M2 is a better camera than the original ZV-1. In my opinion, it's in fact a severe downgrade: 1.) They removed OSS from the lens, which means that you absolutely have to use the electronic stabilization all the time, which leads to a significant crop and quite a bit of artifacts. Plus, even WITH active steadyshot, stabilization is still worse than the ZV-1's combination of OSS+active steadyshot. 2.) The new version is MUCH worse in low light as the maximum aperture zoomed out has been severely downgraded from f/2.8 to f/4. The original ZV-1 is quite usable in low light even fully zoomed out. The ZV-1M2 isn't. 3.) With the new version, you lose a lot of zoom reach. Maximum zoom is now 50mm full frame equivalent instead of 70mm with the old ZV-1. For travel videography, that's a really big downside. Okay, on the wide end you now have a wider field of view, but this wider field of view gets butchered by the active steadyshot crop that you HAVE to accept because OSS has been removed and digital stabilization is the only kind of stabilization left. So, you have a camera with worse stabilization, worse low light capabilities and a worse focal range for which Sony charges 300 bucks more. It's a bad joke.

Huh - how is better than either the previous ZV-1 or the RX100. They stripped it of optical image stabilisation and the slow motion modes, and then made it more expensive! It seems the most bonkers release Sony has made to date?

It's crazy I originally owned the rx100V. I later owned the zv-1. And when I went back one day to look at my older pictures and videos of my rx100V I actually liked them alot more than the zv-1. Why? Not sure honestly. Maybe someone can tell me here? Now this newest zv-1ii for a guy like me just is not appealing at all. I'm actually more interested in the rx100 line again if I were to own any of them, and maybe to add to that I wish they would make a rx100viii? Lol. Bring back the FLASH! and a 1.8 lens. Maybe a 28-150 1.8-2.8. That would be perfect! I personally don't need a stupid hot shoe for a tiny point and shoot, but a flash on those is incredibly imperative! Stop catering to vloggers and youtubers and get back to making solid little shooters for shooters! I personally have zero need to hold a comets to my face all day. But I do love to tell stories. (And include that latest and greatest stabilization too!) OK I'm done

Honestly buy a Nikon Z30. The most underrated ‘Vlogging’ camera out there. Much bigger sensor, better microphone and substantially better image quality. I compared the old ZV1 to the Z30 on my channel and there’s no comparison. Useability and ergonomics of the Z30 blow these Sony vlogging cameras away. The low light capability on this is better than an iPhone but still severely limited compared to a Z30 (or Z E10). I sold my ZV1. The Z30 is actually cheaper than this, that’s crazy. Bonkers to spend almost £900 on this. Would like the ZV E1 but too expensive.

The dead cats always look really knackered in all American reviews of the ZV cameras. I don’t know if this is due to how they are treated, or that they are a different material but they look a lot nicer in the UK 😂

The camera would overheat then. 10 bit requires 4x as much computation compared to 8 bit, likewise there is computation headroom required for 4:2:2 which would also generate heat.

I really respect Sony for NOT participating at the "bigger, better, faster, more-challenge" for so many years! Ten years ago i bought the videocamera PXW-X70. 1 Inch 20 MP Sensor without 4K/UHD 50/60p or 10 Bit 4:2:2. Still the same. So i can still use my 10 year old camera without being ashamed. Same for the RX lineup. I think Sony produced many too much of this 1" Sensors 😀!

For me ZV-1 Mark 1 is much better, because of low light capabilities and wider aperture. If this camera have a 10Bit 422 and 60FPS at 4K - it will be a better choice.

Even though Sony is the best camera manufacturer out there with top-tier autofocus, low-light performance and tons of relevant AI features, ZV-1 II is not worth it. I would say they should just cancel that line. ZV-E10, however, is still an excellent choice because the sensor-size is significantly larger than any phone will be able to match, real bokeh is easier to obtain, you can get much better lens, add filters and truly start getting the semi-pro experience. What Sony needs to do is hurry up and release an APSC camera that does 4k 60fps for reasonable price then they’ll have another hit on their hands!

Sony really needs to clean up their naming scheme. Arthur is right. there is ZV-E1,ZV-E10,ZV-1,ZV-1F.. thats confusing AF if you are not upto date with the sony lineup. That being said, I think this will be a great camera for people who just want to point and shoot stuff for video, Like my parents. I think this is also a great B cam for most Sony users for travel thanks to its size and formfactor. Give this to my wife, and she'll find it a loss less intimidating than a apsc or full-frame camera.

there are people who don't want to buy expensive phones just because they take better pictures, they prefer to buy a camera for that. The big disadvantage of the phone is that after some 2-3 years you have to change it, it stops working as it should and not everyone is willing to spend more than 1000€ for a new one. Instead, you can use a camera for 10+ years without problems.
