Been shooting on a Sigma DC DN 30mm f1.4 for about 6 months now, and it's fantastic. For the price to quality, Sigma is absolutely nailing their Sony lenses.

@@ZachACameraGuy If your camera can shoot square or just crop to square in post and you have full coverage on full frame with apsc lens. Just disable the auto crop to apsc in the menu. Noone has ever mentioned this... Square is quite nice.

I have the old style Sigma 50mm F1.4 (the heavy af one) for my Sony A7ii. I use this lens mainly for car photography and I prefer this lens over my others. This prime lens is extremely sharp and AF is respectable. If anyone is thinking about picking up this lens, do it. You get what you pay for and for the price of this lens you really get a well put together lens.

Hi I'm new to photography and videos do u think I could get this as my only lens with the Sony A7iv?
@careylymanjones
@careylymanjones Жыл бұрын
@@guysofly4315 As long as you understand and accept that you can't change the focal length by twisting a zoom ring, that you have to "zoom with your feet", a 50mm f/1.4 is a fine choice. It's great for portraiture - the fast aperture allows you to blur backgrounds and separate your subject better than slower lenses. It's great for landscape - it's angle of view is only slightly narrower than the average person's field of view, so pictures look like they would if you were viewing the actual scene. It's also easy to visualize what the shot will look like before you even raise the camera. 50mm f/1.4 lenses are almost invariably considered "pro" lenses, and pretty much ANY brand will be sharp AF, especially in the center. It can capture images BETTER than the typical kit zoom lens. Another possibility is a 50mm f/1.8 lens. The famed "nifty fifty" is smaller, lighter, and usually much cheaper than its bigger cousins. IIRC, the Sony 50mm f/1.8 is about 1/3 the price of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4. The f/1.4s deliver more, and smoother, bokeh, but if you shoot more landscapes than portraits, you're gonna stop down, anyway. And the lighter weight is a plus, if you're packing your kit out into the boonies.

Great review, thanks for sharing. If Sigma has competitive AF now, their main disadvantage has been overcome. After memories of using DSLR live view with the older HSM model, I’m really happy for them to have a complete product. As always, beautiful images and sublime broken. If there’s better lenses out there, it’s something you’d hardly have to consider at this level of quality.

I had bought 2 sigma lenses back in the 90s for my Nikon N90. These were the old screw drive lenses. And they always had a slight focus issue, especially the 28-70mm I had. From then on I kind of vowed to never go third party again. Fast forward to the sigma ART series after hearing all the reviews about the 35 and 50 ART I caved and bought the 35mm ART for Nikon F mount for my D800 at the time. It was an amazing lens and had only a slight focusing issue at infinity which was visible at F1.4. Thankfully, adapted on my mirrorless Nikon I don’t see any issues with focusing so far. It’s a very sharp lens for less money than the Nikon 35mm F1.4.

Great review, lovely shots. I got the Sigma 65mm DG DN lens, and it's perfect - but I don't love it. The magic only happens at closeup where the face take up the whole image. At first I dismissed this new 50mm 1.4 DG DN because of the CA issue in extreme cases, but honestly Mr Undone's wide open shots of tree branches on a bright sky interests me zero, if I were ever to go there I'd stop down a lot anyways. But after the initial letdown because of the new 50mm 1.4's CA, I re-reviewed all the shots out there, and realised that's the rendering I love. Perhaps it couldn't have this kind of rendering of Bokeh being an APO design. Just ordered one, picking up from the shop tomorrow, let's see if this is the one.

I think Sony was aiming higher with their GM line than Sigma Art series, no disrespect to Sigma. A few years ago when Canon and Nikon came out with their Mirrorless Mount, they were trashing the limitation of the Sony E-Mount and it couldn't support really fast glass. Then Sony squashed all that talk with GM announcements that each were amazing. So I think Sony wanted to show they could make Top Grade Pro Lenses that could go toe to toe with Canon L Glass.

Thanks Arthur for your style of review. The content is great, relative to a real shooter experience, your opinion counts as your aren't just looking for the best but rather the best fit for what you need. I am a full time working photographer and have had the 35 f1.4 Art DG EF mount with an MC11 and that was a good taste of the Art line but not a good AF experience. I sold it and got the 35 DG HSM for Sony mount and although much better, there were many disappointing moments of AF inaccuracy, this was also felt on my 50 f1.4 art DG HSM for Sony IQ great but it misses too often. I had the 135 art DG EF mount on MC11 which was amazing, I fell in love with the focal length, but it missed AF accuracy too. I exchanged the 135 EF for the 105 f1.4 for Sony, the AF is so much better, image almost masterful, but flare sucks. I have recently sold 35 & 50 and replaced with 65 DC DN which I now love love love, and a used 35 DC DN, and their AF speed and accuracy are so much better, so quick. I had the opportunity to grab a 35 f1.2 DG DN so I am currently using and comparing and its also superb, AF is quick and accurate. I was considering the 85 DG DN, possible replacing the 105 with the 85, a hard choice, except for that 105 flaring. If the new 50 DG DN is a step above all this with image that rivals the legendary 85, I am also looking forward to a great Sigma future, because as you can tell I am a fan of their image quality. Hurray for Sigma, and for Sony allowing all this competitive development.

Agree on the AF, the 85mm is useless for video, just doesn't track the eyes at all for me. Image quality is second to none though. If the 50mm has the same IQ and AF is faster/accurate, this will be a no brainer. There is a rumour Sony is releasing a 50mm f1.4 GM as well though, which will be smaller and cheaper than that f1.2 but we'll see.

No denying this lens is sharp, and its a great review. But I live near SIGMA, and they have terrible customer care values. I had problems with ART lenses, but when I reached out and said I live local they still didn't resolve anything. They are heavy, not consistent. You can have a great one or one not so great. I can see where you are coming from in your video, I don't mean to sound negative, I just think the G master lenses are still better even if not all sharper. Every channel about photography is singing the same song, sharpest, fastest, but photography ( real photography ) has always been about creativity, luck, light, thought process and taking your time with a shot usually turns out much better. If you take photography from the day you started to the present day, I'm sure you will agree that it's become more technically focused rather than easy of use and trial and error. KZbin is a business now for photographer gear reviews, hardly anyone is talking about photography anymore just the next best lens or camera. Great channel, nice reviews as always, and nice people.

Honestly, I don’t understand the obsession with focus breathing. It looks perfectly fine to me most of the time. It seems to me that someone pointed it out, at some time, and that it is now a thing. Most average people would have to have it pointed out to them to either notice or give a toss.

While I agree with you, it is a big deal because it's a distinguishing factor from cinema lenses vs regular lenses. It's irrelevant to KZbin videos in my opinion, but if you saw a movie with visible breathing, it would look incredibly amatuer. It's one of those intangibles that makes cinema look professional.
