Arthur, based on the speed of ssd, i am confused ob buying m4 pro 1TB 14 inch unbinned or M4 pro 512GB 16 inch. I still put 16 inch option because I love larger windows during video editing in Davinci. Some reviewers said that the write speed of 1TB is better than the one in 512GB. So, do you have any suggestion for me? As a note, in my country, m4 pro 1TB 14 inch unbinned is less expensive than M4 pro 512GB 16 inch.

Binning in general term means "categorizing of finished products based on their characteristics" or in chip term means "a sorting process in which top-performing chips are sorted from lower-performing chips". So the fact that those 2 variants exist in the same Pro & Max designation mean that it's a product of Binning, so it's not like one of them is binned & the other one is not binned/unbinned. That's why (from what i saw) others tends use the term "higher binned" & "lower binned" instead of binned & unbinned (And i'm more incline to their term) But other than that great video on breaking down each of the model Artur, Cheers...

order an M4 16" Max last night with 64g ram and 4t SSD. I am a heavy user and in all kinds of creative fields every single day. My M1 Max (maxxed out) is just not cutting it anymore. Here’s a 12-sentence, timestamped summary (1 per minute): --- ****0:00** - **1:00**** Buying a Mac in 2024 is confusing due to Apple's marketing and overlapping options, so this video breaks down which M4 MacBook to choose. ****1:00** - **2:00**** The base M4 MacBook Pro is a slightly enhanced MacBook Air in disguise, ideal for everyday work and light professional tasks. ****2:00** - **3:00**** The base model starts at $1,600 with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, but costly upgrades make external SSDs a smarter option. ****3:00** - **4:00**** Repairit, a tool for recovering and repairing corrupted files, is introduced as the video’s sponsor. ****4:00** - **5:00**** The binned M4 Pro offers great performance for $2,000, excelling at tasks like 4K video editing and photo exports. ****5:00** - **6:00**** For $200 more, the unbinned M4 Pro provides a significant performance boost with additional CPU and GPU cores. ****6:00** - **7:00**** The 16-inch model with the M4 Pro offers a larger screen and better thermals but is less portable than the 14-inch version. ****7:00** - **8:00**** Upgrading to 48GB RAM costs $400, making external solutions a better value unless high memory is essential. ****8:00** - **9:00**** The M4 Max chip, with up to 128GB RAM and exceptional GPU performance, is tailored for demanding professionals like AI developers. ****9:00** - **10:00**** The M4 Max runs hotter and louder in the 14-inch model, making the 16-inch version more suitable for extreme power users. ****10:00** - **11:00**** Nano-texture glass ($150) minimizes reflections but slightly softens the display, making it useful for professional color work. ****11:00** - **12:00**** Stick to base or binned models for cost-effectiveness, avoid unnecessary upgrades, and select configurations based on workload needs. --- This provides concise timestamps for each key point made in the video!

I ordrered a base M4 with 32gb. I thought that getting more ram would help keep my MacBook longer. I plan to edit 4K videos on the move for a few years. Should I cancel and get the m4 pro chip 24gb of ram ? Honestly, I don’t need the extra power since I don’t really care for renders time etc, so is my thinking about the 32gb of RAM correct ?

I must be missing something here, how do you edit video off an external drive? Yes you can store all your footage there (which is what most of us do I'm sure) but don't you have to pull it all into a machine to edit? That would be why you would upgrade SSD I assume. As footage gets more refined it will take less to fill up 500 gigs with multiple projects on the go and all software ect. competing for that space.
@williamhelena75926 күн бұрын
you can load all assets and footage directly from the external drive without importing anything to your internal storage. I can hand my colleague my external drive and they can pick up where i left off on my edit since the entire project including all assets and project files live externally.
@williamhelena75926 күн бұрын
Upgrading the SSD give you more headroom to install programs, plug ins, and to give you a reasonable buffer if you have an incredibly large cache folder from working on very large projects. I have filled a 512gb ssd working on feature length documentaries, podcasts etc and it made my mac crawl. Once an SSD nears capacity performance is severely impacted which is why most people recommend that Pros use a 1TB minimum
@twistingiron72856 күн бұрын
@@williamhelena7592Thanks that's what I thought and meant. I just ordered one with a 1tb so that I could keep projects around as "living documents" for a little longer. I never store original footage on my SSD just the content that is being edited. I have multiple projects on the go at the same time normally between this 'for fun' channel and my other channel/content which is run as a business.

There's actually a reddit post confirming that M4 Pro 14c gives 0% single core performance, 11,6% multi core performance and 13% GPU performance despite having 25% more gpu horsepower on paper which is ridiculously stupid. So that said I went and spent that 200$ to buy a nanotexture and 1tb drive for my 12c 16gpu m4 pro And also 14c is already throttling in 14" chassis which doesn't improve cooling when you spec better processor. Can someone explain what binned and unbinned means to someone who is not techy
@lenshand6 күн бұрын
This is probably my hundredth comparison video I am watching to try and determine where some binned vs unbinned chip comes in. When I go to Apple’s shopping store, I do not have an option to choose! WTF? Are we all missing something?
@counter5116 күн бұрын
@@lenshandyes you are… You always have two configuration for each chip… look at the core ✌️
@Arsenal1206 күн бұрын
Ok I’ll try in non techy terms. When they produce chips, they are usually meant to come out with a defined number of cores for CPU and GPU. However the case is often that the production process isn’t perfect and some chips come out with a core or so that isn’t fully functional. Rather than throw all these chips away, they look at the standard of these chips and decide to use them with a number of the cores closed off. These are called binned versions. So a chip that is meant to have 10 CPU cores unbinned (perfect production) may come 9 CPU cores (binned). It doesn’t affect the performance as the,imperfect core is closed off. Of course if a chip falls below the required core count to meet the binned baseline then it would be discarded. You don’t see anything marked as binned or unbinned on product boxes a specs, but the “binned” version of a chip will be the one with 1 or 2 core less, hence slightly lower specs and cheaper.
@TwinkleX06 күн бұрын
@@Arsenal120 Thanks for this explanation, that makes so much more sense! But how can I avoid binned versions when purchasing from Apple since they don't disclose or identify the core options as binned or unbinned, or is there an unknown tech rule to spot it that none of us lay people know about? 😩

Here’s a summarized breakdown of the transcript: --- ### **Topic:** Buying a Mac in 2024: Comparing M4 MacBook Options ### **Key Points:** 1. **Overview of M4 Chips:** - **M4 Base:** Suitable for everyday work and light heavy tasks (no binned versions, starts at $1,600). - **M4 Pro:** Offers 12 CPU and 16 GPU cores (binned) and a non-binned option with 14 CPU and 20 GPU cores. Ideal for video editing and heavier tasks. - **M4 Max:** Meant for power users needing extreme performance. Available in both binned and unbinned versions, with up to 128GB RAM. 2. **Memory and Storage Upgrades:** - Base models start with 16GB RAM (M4 Base) or 24GB RAM (M4 Pro). - Upgrades are expensive, but external SSDs offer a cost-effective alternative to internal storage upgrades. 3. **Performance Insights:** - **M4 Base:** Excellent for moderate users and light 4K editing. - **M4 Pro:** Great for professionals, offering significant performance improvements over previous models. - **M4 Max:** Overkill for most users; best for specialized tasks like AI and game development. 4. **Price Range:** - Starts at $1,600 for the base M4 MacBook Pro. - Fully loaded 16-inch M4 Max reaches $7,350. 5. **Form Factor:** - 14-inch: Compact and portable, but potentially cramped. - 16-inch: Larger display and better thermals but less portable. 6. **Other Considerations:** - **Nano-Texture Glass ($150):** Reduces reflections but may soften visuals; optional. - **Colors:** Silver (classic, timeless) vs. Space Black (modern, but a fingerprint magnet). 7. **Buying Recommendations:** - **14-inch Models:** - Base M4 for moderate users. - Binned M4 Pro for professionals with some heavy workloads. - **16-inch Models:** - Base M4 Pro for more demanding users. - M4 Max only if you truly need its power. 8. **Conclusion:** - Understand your workload before committing to upgrades. - Avoid overspending on unnecessary features like excessive RAM or Nano-Texture Glass unless your work demands them. --- ### **Takeaway:** The Mac lineup in 2024 offers flexibility, but careful selection is key to avoiding costly upgrades that may not add significant value to your workflow. Choose based on your performance needs and portability preferences.
