Articulated Pneumatic Wings

These are a set of wings I made for Halloween this year. This video was shot a week after Halloween, after wearing them around a Halloween party all night on the preceding Saturday (The feathers on the right got a little ruffled and the speed control on the way down is a little janky.)

Thanks! No, these aren't for sale. Decided to keep them after all.... if you're looking into making a pair for yourself, though, I'd estimate I spent around $650-800 from start to finish. Of course, that includes a bit of running back and forth to the hardware store for different size bolts and stuff. If I ever make a second pair, they'll be better planned and probably on a tighter budget!

Well, there's likely to be 100+ hours of labor in there. I could have cut down on some of that time with more expensive pre-assembled supplies (more feather fringe instead of loose feathers, pre-assembled pneumatic regulators, etc.), so $1500 isn't crazy if someone wants to crank them out quickly. But yeah, $650-$800 is a pretty accurate estimate for this particular pair.

Seriously, check out Alexis Noriega's videos. They are amazing and she breaks down the entire process step by step. I reverse engineered a couple of details after watching the first several videos she posted, but she's since been offering full plans and specs through Patreon. She's gotten into electric motors and remote control and stuff that's even way more advanced now.

They're muslin doped with "Loctite All-Purpose Power Grab" (it's a 5-lb. bucket of glue, basically). The "quills" are made from 12-gauge dropped ceiling hanger wire (same as 12-gauge wire on a spool, but this stuff comes in already straightened 6-ft lengths, which is very handy for feathers that size).
