Can you imagine going into a nightclub during the 1960s and seeing this brilliant man perform for an hour and a half with a 25 piece orchestra? I was lucky enough to do it many times and it was always a thrill. He such a charismatic man. Audiences loved him, which was why he was one of the most popular entertainers in that decade. For those who never had the joy of seeing him in concert, I wish that you could have. Incomparable. My friend, Bobby Darin!

He started off as "just another Rock 'n' Roll singer" in the 50's that was expected to be just another flash-in-the-pan, one-hit -wonder with Splish-Splash but ended up excelling as a dynamic performer that could hold his own with anyone in the Rat Pack, Vegas or on any stage. What a tragic loss at such a young age.

As a performer and professional entertainer myself, he has made an impression on my life for the last 40years. Bobby Darin was indeed great and very much like Frank Sinatra, once they were gone there was nobody to replace them. These guys were the innovators of this style of music and anyone else that would try to fill their shoes, as good as they might be would be labelled as "copycats" or "pretenders".

I've listened/watched this video several times, and am always impressed by not only Mr Darin's performance, but also the fantastic band behind him - what a terrific arrangement! For example - listen closely between 2:20 - 2:30 - you'll hear the 1st trumpet lead the segue into the key change, a little detail I hadn't noticed before. There just isn't anything that can compare acoustically to a wailin' big band!

Darin was the best. Just listen to the musicality and rhythm in his delivery. He swung harder than Sinatra and had a strong sense of R&B that Sinatra and Bennett lacked. Darin's crossover appeal was enormous. He would have been the biggest of them all.

They are two very different types of entertainers -- don't compare them, each was great in his own way. Bobby was multi-talented, he played several different instruments and could mimic them with his voice. Sinatra was a very different kind of entertainer, his music and voice did the talking, not so much his antics on stage. Bobby was fun, but Sinatra was inimitable!

On this day in 1960 {September 26th} Bobby Darin's "Artificial Flowers" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #20 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100... The song is from the 1960 Broadway musical "Tenderloin", which ran for 216 performances in the fall of 1960... The B-side, "Somebody To Love", also charts; it reached #45 and stayed on the Top 100 for 9 weeks... Bobby Darin passed away on December 20th, 1973 at the young age of 37... R.I.P. Mr. Darin...
