Hi Andrea, great information! In one of my other channels I watch up in Canada, Sandi has sheep and she rotates her sheep for breading. Sandi uses the cdr's for 2 weeks then she puts her Ewes in with the rams. I think her winter breading is a natural cycle. She does I think 3-4 different breading cycles per year. I just watched another channel over in New Zealand and they just did AI on part of their cows. Thank you for sharing, I pray that God blesses you today! Thanks so much for this post! I've been using AI with goats for years but never had anyone to walk me through doing a cow . When you put the straw in the sheath the cotton plug goes towards the plunger. With the goats most of the straws have a powder plug at the non-cotton end. With the smaller anatomy of the goats, you do the process through a large test tube with a hole melted in the closed end to pass the sheath through. Passing through the cervix is by feel. Again many thanks for the cow tutorial.

in New Zealand some dairy farmers with Friesians put part of their milking herd to a Wagyu bull. The heifers and steers all go off into a grass fed program for meat - all meat is grass feed in New Zealand - everything you buy - AIing is hard work - you might enjoy a New Zealand youtuber called Once a Day Farmer - he and his farther AI their own herd - they have not long finished and are just about to pull the clean up bulls out of the paddocks - their AI percentage success rate sits around 84% - they do all Jersey herd - it shows how dairy farmers farm in New Zealand

I remember being on my Uncles farm, that my dead left and wish he never did, and the AI guy was there and after he did the insemination he would pull his arm out of the rectus and take the glove as well come up to the kids and say we wanna shake my hand !! I'll never forget how grossed out so many got after a fire on the farm I pulled 6 newborn calves out of the drop filled with manure so the cow could clean them off. He had numerous cows ready to birth within a week of the fire. 6 did the next day even before the barn was dried in after the fire. Luckily the milkkouse and dairy barn survived but the hay barn over the one end did not. Now it's been sold sadly to a wealthy NY city dweller that has bought up all acreage around his home so noone can ever build anything around him. I hope that when he passes the land around his place will be bought up by young people wanting the homestead, farm lifestyle to get our country back to its roots !!@

We A.I.'d our cattle a lot. We put patches on their backsides to that busted open when they were in heat and the other cattle mounted them. That let us know when to breed. New technology with the Fixed time A.I.

I would not be handling that -70C stuff with bare fingers. Many years of lab work with liquid nitrogen and I know you can freeze a finger and then bump it and break it off before you feel it because I've seen it happen.

Why? Why AI and not a bull? Why chemicals, hormones, and injections VS natural insemination? Why spend all this money and time, year after year ...? Those heifers look pretty small, hope they handle pregnancy and birthing ok!

We are wanting some great genetics in our herd without buying top quality bulls. We bred them to a low birthweight bull since they are heifers and the small frame is what we have been working towards. Trying to catch all of these in heat to AI would have been more time consuming than what we did and the possibility of missing several was there. Those were all good questions.

@@VWFamilyFarm Thanks for the reply but I still don't see a reduction benefit of stress, time, or cost by using AI. You have been naturally breeding cows for years with great success, there was just 5 cows that were open! You know how easy it is to put a bull with cows or heifers and it costs very little to feed him. You don't need a topnotch expensive bull to get the breed desired and the cost of a bull would be quickly recouped with the first calving. The cost of AI, the excessive valuable time it takes, the stress it produces, the labor that's needed, the injections and hormones required, the risk of introducing bacteria, and an increase of open heifers or cows doesn't make any sense to me. You would be better off providing an AI service for small farmers/homesteads and keep natural insemination for your herds!

@@darlaherbst5929 AI'ing is just selecting for better genetics. Say you have a cow that produces really great calf's, she can milk really good and has great disposition but her feet aren't holding up in your environment, then you could use a bull with good feet to potentially produce offspring with great qualities. Then the next cow you have isn't producing enough milk for her calf's but her feet are great and everything else is going good with her, well then you would pick a bull with genetic progeny showing great milking qualities to breed her with. Maybe if your herd of cows is all perfect(which no herd is) then you could go buy a $4,000 herd bull(a 2 year old bull can breed roughly 24 cows), but in 2 years you need a new herd bull because you don't want to breed him to his daughters and cause all sorts of genetic problems. The guy that AI's our cows has all sorts of different bull semen we can breed 10 cows to 10 different bull's. I don't think the cows from the past would last long enough or "produce enough offspring" to feed all the people they do without this technology, we would have literally eaten them out of existence, and cows have 4 stomachs to turn grass into edible protein, and most of the ground that has cattle put on it doesn't have good enough soil to grow crops or the weather, and the cows are converting grass into fertilizer to build better soil and distributing it, this has to be managed by humans that have agency beyond most humans of today.
