Artificial intelligence comes to farming in India | BBC News

India has used traditional methods of agriculture for generations, but with 1.4 billion people now dependant on the crops farmers produce, some are turning to technology to boost productivity and profit.
For example on one vineyard, sensor devices are being used to check weather and soil health.
Artificial intelligence (AI) can then figure out when it's time to water the crops, add fertiliser and tackle pests.
Nitin Patil, who works at the vineyard, says the AI advice has helped "save 50% of the water" the farm had been using previously.

They show the truth. You just cherry picked the negative side of the truth cuz of your bias and insecurity. Don't make it about your personal identity. Nation doesn't grow through lies. And even if you prove the disproportion, remember that news tends to be negative inherently

At the risk of being a killjoy, the expense of the technology will be extraordinary (good for tech sector), I guess the Govt is going to help with that and the extra surpluses will also go to tech forever as it always has and does the moment they get their foot in the door. We need little flying robots that eat bugs so we nolonger require pesticides.

As a CSE student from India, we are reminded almost everyday, how AI is rapidly growing here.. Now while there are many pros and cons to this, it is an inevitable change that we need to be prepared for. Amidst the loss of jobs, it's warming to see the benefits of AI in development.

Spin around, like a whirling dervish, clockwise (yang in the northern hemisphere/yin in the southern hemisphere) or counterclockwise (yin in the northern hemisphere/yang in the southern hemisphere). Chanting these mantras(yin mantras) heal each chakra: Um like "from"(root), Am like "Tom"(sacral/solar plexus), Oom like "room"(heart), Em like "them"(throat), Om like "home"(heart/throat/pineal) and Ngm (humming with tongue on the roof of the mouth/pineal/crown). These mantras build yang in the body: Eem like "team", Im like "him" and Am like "lamb". Chant these mantras a number of times at the corresponding sound frequency for each chakra: 1,2,4,8:256hz(root),144:288hz,34:272hz,33:264hz(sacral),5,20:320hz(solar plexus),88:352hz,21:336hz,89:356hz(heart),3,12:384hz(throat), 7:448hz,13:416hz,(pineal),54:432hz(left brain), 55:440hz(right brain), 60:480hz(crown). The days of the week relate to the chakras as follows: sunday(root), monday(sacral), tuesday(solar plexus), wednesday(heart), thursday(throat), friday(pineal), saturday(crown). Sleep with the head placed east. The cardinal directions represent the 4 seasons: east(spring), south(summer), west(autumn), north(winter) in the northern hemisphere or east(spring),north(summer), west(autumn), and south(winter) in the southern hemisphere. Stare into these symbols in this order before sleep or before sundown if resting the sabbath: the eye of horus and its mirror image, the eye of ra, one eye at a time, 7 colored rainbow, then the torus yantra, pentacle, metatron's cube, heptagram, enneagram and then the flower of life mandala before sleep. Go for walks while breathing deeply through the mouth and nose(count your breaths based on the number of chanting repetitions for each chakra depending on the day of week). While walking also periodically touch each finger tip to the tip of the thumb and make fists(mudras). Lift weights and box a punching bag. Place coiled copper wire into the soil and grow non-gmo soy, wheat, corn, mint, potatoes, regular(unfeminized) cannabis seeds(sour hebrew national, mercury rising)and papaver somniferum(7 year crop rotation). Get natto starter to make natto. Place bare feet and hands on the grass. Sunbathe or shine white LED light on skin during the day and at night use LED lights on: red(sunday), orange(monday), yellow(tuesday), green(wedsnesday), blue(thursday), indigo(friday) or violet(saturday) settings and expose all skin to the light. Another helpful suggestion. From friday sunset to saturday sunset rest the sabbath which means no lighting fires(no lighters, stovetops, hot water from water heater with pilot flame, etc.), no physical exercise, no singing or listening to music, and no buying or selling. This will increase yin in the body for the following week. Breaking the sabbath(doing the opposite) will increase yang in the body for the following week. During the sabbath, if keeping the sabbath, wear all white clothing. If breaking the sabbath, wear all black clothing. Rotate the sleeping cardinal direction saturday sundown: east, south, west, north in the northern hemisphere or east, north, west, south in the southern hemisphere. Take boswellia, neem(sparingly), cinnamon, turmeric, curcumin, nutmeg, gotu kola, schizandra, fo-ti, oregano oil, garlic, vitamins and minerals. Drink lemon juice, lemon balm, mint herbal teas and kefir. Drink organic caffeinated coffee, tea or cocoa in the morning(take breaks from caffeine as well). Also take n-acetyl cysteine, bromelain, and nattokinase. Have ivermectin paste, pyrantel paste, zeolite, and an amanita muscaria infused chocolate(polka-dot) and a 500mg delta 8 thc infused chocolate bar(blue planet). Drink baking soda in water(alkaline),brush teeth and gargle with baking soda. Gargle and brush teeth with peppermint, clove and cinnamon oils. Experiment with resting one different day of the week the same as the sabbath(from sundown to sundown)or every other day sabbath. Worship these solar at day/lunar at night:Brahma/Saraswati(east), Vishnu/Lakshmi(south in the northern hemisphere/ north in the southern hemisphere), Shiva/Kali(west), and Yama/Dhumorna(north in the northern hemisphere/south in the southern hemisphere). Dont forget that the age old agricultural practices has made india self dependent on food production the ai system is used to just increase the yield...... From the time of green revolution india has become self reliant and it exports rice to countries like saudi arabia , europe and us This is our tradition to uphold our practices but we are also working in shoulders to get advanced technically in the field of farming

Because of green revolution, use of chemicals, have grown to a larger scale and there residues have long impact on body. Some years after independence India could not control its population nor they would afford to import food! So few Americans supplied very cheap chemicals to India to keep yields at maximum level and make sure India could at least provide food for its people. Westerners will telecast unique things around the world but that doesn’t mean agriculture in India is getting modern! India is still struggling to cope with agriculture and allied activities

@@bestvideos35 It’s not South Indian. India has around 16 major languages, in North there are Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese. If a Punjabi farming has innovation a Haryanvi farmer would feeling happy, even though they are Hindi is trying to unite these languages. The feeling of hearing them is beautiful. It’s a sense of appreciation which we need to have towards our own languages, like German(Deutsch) is spoken in Switzerland and Austria. It’s a sense of respect they give to their own. Telugu and Kannada are much older and cultural roots dates to 1000 B.C Not feeling proud it a shameful act. I don’t expect everyone to respect everything but insulting is wrong.

Innovation welcomed but farm policies have to be implemented, fragmented land holdings give not much profit for the low yield it generates

As a person living in the outskirts of Bengaluru (IT-BT city), I can proudly say we are actively involved in farming from many generations. Hope our govt. will avoid looting our land for city development and encourage agri practices.

Maintaining soil health is very very important. The microbial activity should be given more importance. Our age old practices emphasizes on that. This AI tech from fasal is not affordable by the marginal farmers who comprises of 90 % of farmers. Most of the water just flows away or doesn't percolate as the porous nature of soil is simply removed due to absence of microbs and earthworm. Same hold for bugs and insects, we are killing the friendly bugs and insects who are responsible for damaging crops have slowly developed immunity. Bees & Birds population are on decline. We kills snakes who used to roam our fields. The entire ecosystem is destroyed. According to me a farmer is not a businessman , he is like a son who takes care of mother earth and in return mother never disappoints. Govt. Instead of giving heavy subsidy and burdening our exchequer should concentrate on building ITI-Agri , we need more skilled farmers.

It's not an either or situation, you know. Infact, AI can be used to avoid the negatives of both traditional farming and industrial level farming. Traditional farming relies heavily on age old observed inferences, while AI can help with doing actual real time observation. You just have to use the traditional methods based on those data. Like how this person uses AI to just collect weather data and soil conditions. He can just simply minimize his water usage, and their is nothing against 'tradition' here. Just because he uses that data, doesn't necessarily mean he can only use modern chemicals, he could very well be using organic traditional fertilizers. It could also help us avoid eutrophication, but making necessary drainage design changes, which is something Traditional farming doesn't care about. We need to remember that times have changed, the seasons, climate and soil have changed and we cannot just blindly rely on old wisdom, that was made from observing past conditions, which isn't the same now.

My comment might be pessimistic, but these technologies can be scaled in production by large/commercial/industrial/corporate farming. Those farming methods will reduce costs by optimizing resources (from seeds to pesticides to marketing the produces), thereby making it hard for small and medium scale farmers to thrive. Technology optimizes things, yes! But at what cost?

Also add to this the fact that AI requires massive amount of energy to run. I don't know about other forms of AI but chat gpt requires supply of huge amount of fresh water. What would be the point of saving water on agriculture and finding a new technology to waste it on.

@@rudra-b3iactually the training of AI is the thing requiring most of energy use. Running the AI itself (especially for purpose like agriculture rather than NLP / gen AI) don't cost too much power. Also, governments usually give subsidies for farmers regarding electricity use 😇

@@rudra-b3i So listening to the nay-sayers, let's throttle all growth and development. People like you 5 decades ago called the Computer a Devil, and wanted it to be banned by the law! Look where we reached when we flushed that nonsense down the toilet. Had we acted the way you are doing, we would have been stuck to the same fatalism you are showing here. Stop being a Negative Nanny. It shows you have no ideas of your own. If you cannot see the positive side, just stop viewing.
