Nearly 70 feet below the ocean's surface, off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, is a reminder of a bad idea from the 1970s: hundreds of thousands of used tires sitting on the ocean floor.

My guess is that they needed to dump a bunch of tires into the ocean, and found an excuse to do so.

They dumped them tires because they had nowhere to store them and they couldn't melt the rubber because of the smell and pollution,

They'll eventually deploy better(efficiency/environmentally/etc.) and proven artificial reefs after the clean up which will yield significantly better results. "The tires saw 40 percent less colonization by marine life than artificial concrete reefs and produced less biomass than natural rocky areas nearby. “Even worse, the tire reefs collapsed and spread out, damaging natural habitat,” says Agnes Poiret of France's marine protected areas agency.

But that amount of fish, for a project that has been dropped since 1970, is abysmal.

@@dinosaur8825 I think I have an interesting idea For coral gardening why not make some statues from coral creating characters from Disney’s but little mermaid king triton flounder Ariel her sisters not to mention a long plenty of places for predatory fish to hide and here’s the best part extract DNA from corals And sponges not to be confused with the ones you have in your bathroom then we can unlock some DNA and re-create some extinct species of coral and the same can be done for prehistoric species of crustaceans Rays and sharks And even some extinct mackerels swordfish Marlins and other sea creatures so you can feel like you’re not only in an underwater Eden You can also explore and sea creatures from another time

Wonder whom initially approved that project and how much taxpayer $$ was spent to build that problem in the first place, bet those involved made a huge sum of profits upon that bad idea that’s now costing a lot more to remove it all.

Who in the right mind would think dumping rubber into the ocean would create a reef? I am glad efforts were made to remove the tires, but this is an environmental disaster and a costly mistake. They could have easily melt the tires and recycle it to make turf, school playgrounds, and road banks.

Rubber absorbs all heavy metals. When rubber decomposes, those metals leak out. The rubber tires are made out of aren't pure rubber to begin with. Rayon, zinc, naphthalene and PAH are all chemicals contained in tires. If tires are used, make sure to keep them far from humans. Plants/trees are usually very hardy, they will survive the polution easily, however insects are not. So.. they will likely suffer and die from the pollution.
