what do you think about this chair design? i really don't like it. it looks basic and it's not pretty and on top of that it seems to be more complex to work with than others. uses a lot of fabric for the back part and there's no real benefit because of it. when you handle the chair you will grab on the fabric and the fabric only helps with holding on to dirt. it's more difficult to clean than wood. seems like no upside to this design.

Newly retired and thought I would try my hand at re-upholstering our kitchen island chairs. Your videos have been great in helping me learn the techniques. 4 down and 2 to go. I particularly had issues with the oval chair back and working from the top and bottom to the sides but your method worked much better.

Ok - great video, with your great help, plus another video on pli grip, we have just finished six chairs. We used a Bosch PTK battery stapler which was just adequate. Would have been great to have a pneumatic stapler but cost too much for this one project. You may think that the cost of the staple remover used seems very high for this tool but it’s well worth it, saved time and effort (and sanity) stripping down and during covering. Very pleased with the results. Thanks again from novice 1 and novice 2

Remarkable vedio. Very well done. I'm about to redo my parson chairs. The material is still good. But one coshin got snagged. I love the material. But I can't find the same style to replace just the damaged one. So I'm just going to recover all them. Beside the table I'm doing in black base with title top. And a decorative center tile. I agree with others that you are a talented teacher! I was doing great up until the metal tack strips had to be installed. My parson chair had angles on the side, (not straight edges), and I had a difficult time putting in the metal tack strips. I tried the plexigrip tack strips as well and those were really hard to use with my chair. I guess my question for you is, does the metal strip points go into the upholstery when you use the mallet or the wood frame, cause I couldn't get them to go into the wood? Because of the angle I had, I just decided to staple the back and used a trim that actually tied in well to the material. Thanks for the video!
@ArtisanUpholsteryStudio3 жыл бұрын
That’s a great creative solution! Another way to do it is to hand stitch it. The metal tack strips are getting very cheaply made these days, so they may bend and crimp instead of going into hard wood. Very frustrating!

Great tutorial. I have 8 parsons chairs that were skirted and needed updating. I removed the skirt and will clean up the legs as you show in your videos. I don't need to reupholster the chairs, but the edge around the bottom of the chair is not cleanly finished (i.e. piping that goes up the back just ends and isn't secured under the chair edge, fabric isn't neatly folded under around the legs). I debated about making and attaching double cording, but I need something closer to 1" to cover the imperfections. I found some trim tape that will work, but it's $30 a yard. Can I glue this around the bottom edge or how would you attach it? Don't want to screw up expensive trim. thanks

I love your work and the chair is just like my chair! I'm going to do it your way instead of making a pattern from the old (and flaking) cover. But I'm worried about the stapler part. I can't imitate your actions because I have a spring-loaded (strong!) manual stapler. It takes a lot to squeeze and I'm not sure I can actually do it one handed or reach around the way you do. I'll have to turn the chair over to get those staples in underneath. Do you or does anyone know a video that uses a manual stapler? Thank you!

Hi Aimee; great tutorial on reupholstering Parsons dining chairs! Quick question....on mine, where the seat back and the back of the seat cushion meet is solid, so when recovering the seat cushion, I can't push through the material in order to staple it to the underside of the back edge seat cushion. Wondering if you have any thoughts on how to deal with that?
@ArtisanUpholsteryStudio5 жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa, Thanks for your comment! I bet if you strip your chair down it will be obvious how it was upholstered before. Perhaps it’s mostly sewn and then slipped on and stapled along the bottom, or maybe there are small “pulls” that go between the seat and back. Sometimes it’s upholstered separately and then bolted together afterward. However it was done originally, it would be easiest for you to duplicate. You can use the old pieces as your template for sewing. Hope this helps! Aimee

Great video - great instructions! Keep on watching and pausing step by step. Just about to cut final pc for back of parsons chair. Don’t think I saw how you measure back flap pc. Do you cut around top so its flush on the sides on top and then leave sides wider to allow for metal tack strips?

Just measure the exact size of the back and add 3”. So if the exact size is 22” x 30” cut it 25” x 33”.

Hi from Oz! Thank you for sharing your easy to follow tutorials. Do you have any tips on how to remove black rubber mallet marks from the upholstery? My husband and I made a rookie error and tapped the back of the chair with a mallet and didn't use a buffer piece of fabric. Also where the piping join is, the gap of the tapped in back piece is quite noticeable. Any tips on how to fix this. Thanks again for your videos! ps it is our first dining chair, only 5 to go lol
@ArtisanUpholsteryStudio5 жыл бұрын
You could try soap and water first. Without knowing the fabric, impossible to say what would get it out. As for the join, my only comment is that the last one you do will probably look better than the first one (practice, practice).
