If you're along for the journey we're basically planning on teaching people everything about normal painting, while still using contrast, until one day it turns out you're all Acryllic-Badasses, but don't tell anyone, it's a secret... *note, this is different from 'total-badass' from April Fool's video, we'll leave that type of teaching for other channels 🙄*

It's not quite as easy as that. While "hopping" from yellow to blue would work, hopping the opposite way would not. You usually want to be moving towards the cooler colours for shadows.

You really upped your game with the last couple videos. I think you're on a good track here. I enjoy and appreciate the way you present information in this one. I will keep the shading technique in mind, when trying my paint scheme for my army, standing on my table right now. Well done, giving Marco a shout out as well. He deserves it. Even though, his videos definitely require a lot more knowledge of painting and color theory to be of real value to most people. I can still rewatch videos from two years ago and learn so much, I missed back then. Of course it's still stunning what he is able to do, no matter how good you are.

It struck me that this method is a form of layering, but accounting for the properties of translucent contrast paints. When layering with opaque paints (as with Zumikito's favoured method), you start with the darkest colour in the base coat and layer on successively brighter paints covering less area each time. With contrast paints, you start with the brightest colour in the base coat and layer successively darker colours because of the subtractive quality of translucent paints. You could give it a fancy name like "contrast layering" or "subtractive layering". Great video!

(If I tried it no doubt it wouldn't look so good but still). Every other fast "slapchop" type method has looked a bit....crap to be honest. This looks achievable on big numbers but also sublime and glorious. I'm just amazed! And excited to try this.

I really think this is one of the best mini painting channels on KZbin right now. You do a great job of explaining simple and advanced concepts in a digestible way. I'm new to mini painting and you have definitely upped my painting game! You could make some videos on some aspects of painting many channels skip over like brush control, how to hold the brush, how much paint you should have on your brush, etc. One thing I hate which I don't see many KZbin videos talk about is bits of dust or hairs getting on my models, I'd love to see a video talking about avoiding that.

I honestly feel like my pile of unpainted models is so overwhelming, I am not likely to take the extra time to experiment and try new things. Sometimes seeing is believing, and seeing people like you try new things, is a reminder to give things a try too...or at the very least, we can see the results and give them a go, knowing what the end result will look like. Here is the thing, a lot of people hate on contrast paints but really its just what we did with underpainting and glazes for ages but not having to do half a dozen coats to get there. For painting masses of troops to get your figs on the table and play it's absolutely brilliant. I always teller newer hobby people to just use contrasts and you can have a decent looking army in not a ton of time and without a ton of effort and they look good at 3ft away which is the goal. If you want to spend time do it on centerpieces or heroes.

Your guides have helped a ton - the emphasis on multiple thinner coats in particular has already helped a ton. its surprising how easy contrast methods are, especially with a prehight as a base coat, or a dry brush over them i`m quite enjoying doing the marines with a metallic paint base as it gives a look like a metallic car paint job and i find metals have some inbuilt highlight and shades because your own model creates its own highlight and shade from natural reflected light i watched this because after the marines i`m doing nids, and my idea was to go with the contrast method, so this proved really useful, thanks

You could definitely put this *over* metallics, it's very similar to a lot of my previous metallic methods, just using contrast, as well as shades. There's some food-for-though :) Our pleasure, buddy!

As a sincere suggestion, having the most liked comment get a brush set might give an incentive for people not to like other people’s comments that they enjoyed, just so they don’t get competition- it might actually hurt engagement is people take it too seriously. Wonderful colours, though, those greens and blues are phenomenal on the xenomorph-looking Barbagaunt shapes… I wish more Tyranids used that seashell look. Thank you for the guide, that’ll be damn useful in about a week.

First I thought "Looks like serious pooling" but that controlled allocation works brilliant. I never thought about implementing an X-Factor. Still stuck in a very linear painting style from dark to light and only use darker colors to fix mistakes. Im eager trying to work more with that concept and Contrast Paints in general... atm theyre lonely on the shelf. Thank you very much for opening my eyes! I never used Shades/Washes to tint colors before Applikation but as filters. Great video and im going to try that once I find time to paint the new Nids :)

You're most welcome, my man. There's a world of possibilities waiting out there now! I am very carefully planning and scripting a 'contrast.. what next?' video that's going to take some of our contrasr concepts and apply them to normal painting and washes, should be out in the next few months. I imagine this will help people going both ways, from contrast, and to contrast :)

Leviathan is quite a popular scheme so I think you’d get views, especially with the new preview we saw today. What I’m a bit stuck on is how to achieve that “almost black” purple they have on the carapaces without losing details.

Hopefully we'll catch you in the next one! This is a great question, and also a very difficult one to answer, it changes a lot! I like my positive feedback loops, but you can get that army painting, or single figure, it's just smaller on single minis, but mostly I like the struggle/grind and feeling that you're improving. These days I paint almost entirely for the channel, I don't get so much time for my own stuff, but I'm thinking up some ways to make the two align more :)

Thanks for doing this focus on using contrast + shade, I sometimes mix the two also but your application of doing glazes + controlled shading in multiple steps is masterfully done & you explained it very well, thank you! All the examples look fantastic, and while I usually am a shcker for green i think the blue carapace looks the best out of them (maybe my nostalgia of old nids is making me biased 😆).
