this one video and model has inspired me a lot! I've always wanted to do a kind of a corrupted forest spirit idea themed army for sigma and this has been the nail in the coffin for me to actually work on one! thank you for being such an amazing inspiration for this and giving me some amazing ideas for the future army! As for the object your character is holding, a skull with smoke billowing from its eyes and some kind of OLS emanating from the recesses in the eyes, suggesting some kind of hidden power or evil enchantment is present in the skull :)

For what to put in his hand how about a mirrored ball, like what Jareth uses in the movie Labrynth! He uses it for many different things and should be fun to paint, whether your model is scrying, or just admiring himself in it. Another great video. I am loving this series.

@@ArtisOpus after a bit of thinking I’d probably do the orb in chrome/silver. To really sell the mirrored aspect I’d do a glaze of the models skin tone next to the fingers holding it. And then another glaze on the side facing the face of the miniature. Small head shape if mirroring the miniature. Maybe a silhouette if scrying. The glazed should be thin enough to tint the silver but not thick enough to remove the mirror feel. This is all just theory crafting as I haven’t actually tried this myself.

@@ArtisOpus maybe don’t paint it at all? Try a weird practical effect and find some highly polished mirror spheres of roughly the right shape? It would be super distinctive and immediately mark him out though, and would stick out like a sore thumb, and I’ve no idea how it would look.

Fantastic work! Much more ambitious than I would attempt, but you pulled it off brilliantly. As for basing, I've found that using a mix of dried parsley flakes, dried cilantro and the contents of several (unused!) tea bags makes a great forest ground cover. Adding different spices can alter the look and texture. Just be sure to soak it with plenty of watered down PVA glue to keep it in place. I've heard that misting it with rubbing alcohol first helps the PVA soak in better, but haven't tried it yet.

@@ArtisOpus when I have paralysis, I randomize and if I don't agree with the immediate result, I drop it without question and randomize again. Otherwise I stick to the result. It forces you to make decisions one at a time using your gut. Your subconscious has probably already figured it out lol

Idea for the hand: Have it holding a large egg in its hand, looking colourful and fey, but with dark maggot-like corruption seeping from the hand and beginning to warp one side of the egg. This fits somewhat with the forested base of the other winged model and the Sylvaneth parts, but also fits in with the chaos/corruption theme you're going for. Almost like the beast-herd is tainting the forest, and this creature is performing the ultimate sacrilege and corrupting a creature before it has even been born/hatched. It would also be pretty easy to do as an egg shape is quite basic, but you could pock-mark the egg or add ridges and tendrils around the hand where the corruption is beginning. Maybe take some inspiration from Ovomorphs in the Alien films. Great video by the way, very inspiring!

If you want to go crazy with it, make the egg out of clear resin and put a greenstuff embryo inside, then you can do some paint trickery and OSL to make the warp corruption cast a glow against the embryo within the egg to make the shadows stand out. Too complicated? Probably.

Just watching the flame applied to the model made my heart race! For the basing theme, perhaps an overgrown graveyard look? For the bigger models you could incorporate stone statues, crypts covered in vines, cadavers... and for others just throw on a tombstone or skull?

cool dark dirt wet looking with some mushrooms in warm whites and browns and maybe even glowing greens and yellow with a cooler tones for the models to draw attention and then warm osl on the demons orb/skull to tie it all together

for bending plastic I've always used boiling water. you could get the suitable bend your looking for in the shaft if you submerge the handle in boiling water until its bendable then hold the plastic in the shape you want and submerge in cold water to set the plastic.

I think for basing them, you should go with a mixture of woodland and corruption. It could be very thematic to have the scorched/corrupt ground emanating out from their footsteps and the lush grass woodland closer to the edges of the base. That would also let you work in those sweet sweet madcap mushrooms in nice vibrant colours as well as potentially having corrupted versions amongst the troops as well. The further up the hierarchy you go, the larger the bases get, the more stark the contrast between life and death would be.

Will this army be worshipping a specific Chaos God? you could go for the skull of a rival gods greater daemon (or lesser if the greater head is too big) or something like that? Alternatively perhaps the glowing skull of the characters ancestor who guides him? (or who is perhaps in fact a chaos god pretending to be an ancestor). I think the forrest ideas would be simply keeping vines, or roots wrapping around the bases especially with how you described having pieces being raised up on the bases. The roots can also be all over the terrain portions of the base almost like they are devouring whatever they can wrap around.

I really like elemental looks so this will be my design: Do a molten/fiery and icey but instead of painting each mini as different elemental combine the two on each of the minis. So you will get 2 minis which each one is half icey look half strong fiery/molten look and you would see the fight between those two elementals on their bodies in meeting areas. I would also do the base at this style either with crackle pain above lava or even craft rocks from cork or xps which will be above the lava, the ice side can be done by sanding a bit into the base giving it a lip so resin won't get out or using a tape for keeping the resin inside. I don't remember you painting any firey looking mini only bases and terrain, at least on youtube so this will be great to see. I am seeing in my mind two crazy looking elementals where you can see the crazy fight between ice and fire on each of their bodies. Hope you liked the idea and don't forget about the lockdown hair and beard you promised :) Edit: another mind poped in my head, you said forest so what if the base will be half frozen forest half burned forest where you can still see the fire at some of the places like for example black leaf that still have hot burning spots on it

In terms of what he should be holding I think it should tell a story. I get the Hamlet skull idea but think it would be awesome if you could have something related to his enemies or his background. A cool idea for me would be to have a bird in his hand. It would then ask the question “is that some sort of familiar he controls or is he looking at it and comparing himself with it and his beginnings and journey to come.” Modelling wise you could really have some fun with the painting, throwing on colours which complement the wings on the beast man creature and helping you tell the story. Edit: there’s a raven from the Corvus cabal model that could work or the bird from the Kor'sarro Khan model.

Suggestion thematically your army could embrace the elementals, earth, air, fire and water. Each of those big beastmen could champion each element and the units around them themed accordingly. Loving the look of this! In terms of colour schemes, I'd always aim for a more "realistic" look for the character themselves, with more eldritch/supernatural elements in the brighter colours. So dark browns and skin tones, maybe a dark reddish armour, then brighter blue or blue/green for the glowy thing in his hand? As for what to put in his hand, a flaming skull would be awesome, and test your modelling skills a bit more! 😁

"my desk is an absolute tip" I honestly cant remember mine ever being anything but a tip! The mess in your case is absolutely worth it, this army is going to look properly mental! For the basing, I don't know how doable this would be but how about making everything in the middles of the bases, around the feet of the model look really dead and decaying and nasty, but keep the edges looking lush and green and forresty? (I just ran out of words there, sorry, that's the best my brain could fart out) after all it is a daemon army right? so maybe that could be a way of showing the corrupting effect they have on their surroundings?

Great video as always. How about instead of holding a skull or other orb ish object in its hand they could have a bird perched on their finger? Or they could be summoning a swarm of birds a la Bioshock Infinite? As far as the color scheme goes I think a black feather color for the wings like a crow or raven is obvious. I would love to see you try and replicate the same slight chromatic shift that raven feathers sometimes have. OR, you could otherwise go with a completely strange scheme for the feathers like alternating black and white or some kind of bright color like pink or purple.

What about a unit that is kind of like a slave driver, some large beast that is driving forward captured humans or cultists? For colour schemes what about looking at sloths? They have a nice colour fur but it's often funked up with moss and other grime adding nice contrast to it in certain places? Loving this idea for an army by the way.

Great work Byron, so manyvtine I see great conversions let down by what you were saying about having all parts flowing in one direction (that trumps spice girl reference 🤣) As it moves forwards it's getting a real twisted nature vibe for what you're producing with making sure of more fluid lines than straight solid lines, so because of that I would like to suggest something for the armour and metallic parts of these models, try and do them in a insect carapace idea maybe using the colour shift paints from someone like green stuff world etc. be great to see how you use them as I have been a bit scared to. You could also tie in their use to the feathered wing ms of the cabal as you can see looking at proper birds wings they have that shimmer of colour. Sorry rambling on....

Love the models so far Byron. I think for the orb a open mouthed "screaming skull" with glow effect coming from within the skulls eyes and mouth would be awesome to see. As for basing and paint scheme I feel an Autumn theme with reds, Brown's, oranges and yellows with some rose gold metallic would really fit your beastmen corrupted fairy aesthetic, basing with dry leaves, mushrooms and spider webs and weathered forest ruins. As for more models would like to see you use the plague drones wings maybe on something, maybe a mount or a hound type unit. Can't wait to see how this army shapes up, Great work!

Thanks dude, as for a narrative for this theme... Once peaceful clan of peaceful clan of beastmen fairy dudes has had one too many Autumn harvests pillaged from them and now moving into winter has been forced into praying too the dark gods. They are now corrupted taking up the scythes and sickles they once used to tend their crops and cutting down anyone in their path offering them as a sacrifice to the dark gods and consume the flesh to survive. !! I think holding a non-humanoid skull/head would be cool, could be that they're holding the head of the previous 'chief' whose position they just took. could add some flames to add a lightsource and explain why it's already a skull, as they've just burnt it in their hand.

Great video. Wish I could help with suggestions but I'm a creative black hole. My autism doesn't accommodate that type of thinking. When I watch you working on the development of the figure it may as well be black magic or witchcraft you are using. The creativity on display is a mystery to me. Makes for enjoyable viewing though.

Wow. Very impressive. Really keen to see that beast getting some colors 😉 colorwise I’d go for purple/brown cloth, pale skin and greenish „energy“ glow effects. Base could be cursed jungle with a lot of vines and tendrils maybe crawling up the models... and maybe add some broken old temple bits or something to bring some variation in.

Another great video Byron, seeing your converting process is both helpful and inspiring. I'd love to see that guy holding a giant skull, but with greenstuff flames built into it to be your glow/light source. Think it would be awesome if this was a real mystic green flame as well instead of the conventional red/yellow flames and it would add another level in terms of interest with the light but establishing the characters power and darkness. Either way though, cant wait to see what you do with it!

So, I realize this is too late. Why not soften the staff with boiling water instead of the lighter? Bend it, then use iced water to get it to set. Admittedly I have not tried this with HIPS but I would think it "should" work.

Watching this kinda makes my simple head and weapon swaps feel somewhat inadequate! Colour scheme wise, I'd probably look at greens and purples. Theres such a wide range of variations in hue, from muted forest greens to neon, which works great for osl purposes (as seen in most necron armies!) Purple is a great complimentary colour to green, and can be quite sinister or other-worldly in nature. If you’re going for grim dark models maybe kick things up to 11 on the base colours, a load of neon purples, pinks and reds for some trippy shrooms maybe, with the osl on the models in similar colours to tie everything together. I’ve always wanted to see a big ork vehicle painted up to look like it was made using other factions old vehicles. Something like an ultramarine bonnet with eldar sides and just go nuts from there. Always thought it would be a good way to show off several factions paint schemes and also make it look like something that could exist.

For color scheme and basing, i would go for a fractured realm kind of thing. These guys you are making are so monstrously bizarre, they wouldnt really fit a mushroomy forest (IMO). I would make it so that its like they are pouring out of their realm into a night forest illuminated by a blue-purplish glow from the fracture which happened between "ours" and their realm. You could also add alien bits of terrain to the bases, like strange structures which fell through the fracture.

What about holding some kind of enchanted skull. Glowing eyes, organic stone like skull ( slight sculpting with green stuff ) light coming from the eye sockets. Then you can call back to the herd stone. Also if you can swing it I think it would be cool to have growth sprouting from the skull and gripping the hand and maybe going down the forearm. A subtle creepy thing that type of magic. Just spitballing here 😉 BTW, weapon scythe blade came out fantastic!
