So the lower tier models are unable to calibrate BT.1886 or the XDR backlight because they are software locked, and they lack the EDR to do so, not because they are incapable. Those displays are no more than 1600 nits peak, and the previous devices could do them and was costing $120 cheaper. No mention how low light performance is. Having 10000 nits capability is highly likely to compromise the low light performance. No one needs 10k nits, displays are far off from that.

Yeah, it's disappointing. I recently bought a display plus, just a month before these came out in order to calibrate my home OLED and XDR macbook display. Hopefully some third party will rig up some software that can calibrate those displays. As it is, trying to use the display plus screws up the contrast on my macbook badly.

There are 2 reasons why you might want to consider the Display Plus HL. 1. If you want the ability to do full HDR calibration in the future when the feature is available. 2. If you plan on calibrating displays that are brighter than 3000 nits in the future. If you are a photographer, I would say the Display Plus HL is really null for the most part. And I think that Display Pro HL is going to be a long lasting device.

Sure i mean about calibrating light emitting device like displays, monitors, laptops. Does spectrophotometers more accurate with creating icc profile or will be same? Thank you!
@ArtIsRight

Different is a better way to look at it. Because they measure color differently, comparison it nil really. it really comes down to use case. What you are going to get in the end is about the same. Our human vision can't tell the variations.

@@ArtIsRight Oh, thank you very much for respond Mr. Art! May I ask one more question. It is believed that because colorimeters use colored filters for calibration, over time the colorimeter's calibration accuracy decreases as these colored filters fade. But the principle of work of spectrophotometer is different and there is like a prism and it does not lose its original properties over time. They say that the colorimeter after 2-3 years may not be as accurate as a new one. What do you think, can this be true?

" It is believed that because colorimeters use colored filters for calibration, over time the colorimeter's calibration accuracy decreases as these colored filters fade." This was more so in the past, current gen does not suffer from this any more. We are talking about devices that were released more than 15 years go. "But the principle of work of spectrophotometer is different and there is like a prism and it does not lose its original properties over time. " It measures the color and light differently, that is for sure. As far as losing his original property overtime, it would depend on the white balance tile that you're using. depending on the device, some of them have tiles that are exposed with a cover, some are built into the device itself. These tile do age over time but to a lesser degree. "They say that the colorimeter after 2-3 years may not be as accurate as a new one. What do you think, can this be true?" I have not found this to be the case with new regeneration devices. I have a color perimeter that is more than 10 years old now to still perform just as well as it did on day one. The Delta variation does not change much comparing between the new and old device. Also, when you're doing these measurement, you are really measuring a point in time anyway so variation will happen regardless. Hope this helps.

Icc works on top of reference mod . Think of reference mode as based adjustment for the display but not calibration. Hi. Thanks alot for this video. Very very helpful. I've just bought the Display Plus HL - looks like a powerful piece of kt. However....i'm having a couple of issues... 1: Is it possible to import the .icc file into the main Display setting of the Macbook pro M2, presets? I have tried to do so via the Colour Sync folder but for some odd reason the file won't import via the 'import' (three dot) option in the System Settings, now will it allow me to drag and drop, or copy and paste it into the same folder. It's pretty tedious having ot open the Calibrite Calibration Software to change the profile on the Macbook. 2: Is it possible to maintain manual brightness control over the colour calibration. The screen tends to be too dark for my needs when calibrated for video @ BT1886. Any adivce, pointer would be gratefull received. Thanks again for all your hard work and knowledge Truely appreciated.

I know this isn't the device but please lend me a hand.. I have an xrite i3 plus package and I am calibrating a 2021 MacBook Pro (XDR) and a Viewsonic "Color Sonic" 27" 4k monitor. I am a bit confused by how I can't just simply see the profile crested in i1profiler in the Macbook's "presets". Watching another one of your videos, it seemed like I needed to pull x and y point values, along with luminance levels, from the i1 software and import them into the "fine tune" calibration, putting in a suggested RGB x and y value for the target (?)... So I did all that to the MacBook. And then I did the regular i1profiler calibration process with the Viewsonic. For that, I was able to directly select the profile created, unlike the MacBook process. So after doing all of this, I still see subtle variations in color from the external monitor, MacBook Pro, and then my iPhone. The iPhone appears greener. I want the ACTUAL color to match print and web (is this totally possible)? Something consistent with the RGB colorspace. Is it possible for all devices to look the same? :/ My work relies heavily on color accuracy and this is driving me nuts. Does this process sound like the right approach to you?
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
simply put you are trying to match different LCD with different backlight type and light output, it can be done to a point and then it all just fall apart. All of the iPhone Pro / Pro Max are OLED, Mac XDR are miniLED and viewsonic is mostly an IPS, you do the math, they are never going to match, but they can come close that is all that you can do.

@@ArtIsRight But does the second part about importing the x and y point values provided by i1profiler into "fine tune" calibration sound accurate? I've found that the stock sRGB color profile on the Viewsonic matches the "Photography" preset on MacBook Pro, with P3 changed to sRGB. this produces a closer match than my custom profiling. What gives? I hate to have this very expensive i1 color profiling system produce worse results than the stock profiles :/ thank you for your help

CEO Steve Shaw says [low-light capabilities may be compromised] as an inherent limitation with any of the high-brightness versions.

With Apple XDR display for new 14" and 16" Macbooks Pro, does it make sense to calibrate the displays with new HL devices from Calibrite, or just do fine-tuning for white point using a previous iteration of Calibrite devices that don't support mini-leds? I have an earlier generation, and I don't know if it is worth buying the new generation, given the significant cost increase. I'm doing printing and photo editing on the new Macbook Pro.

Display Pro HL sells at the same price at the ColorChecker Display Pro. As far as to calibrate or just simply do fine-tune that would depend on your workflow and needs.

@@ArtIsRight thanks for getting back to me! Really appreciate your work, long term subscriber. In my personal case I have the Calibrite ColorChecker Display which is basically the Calibrite Display SL and has the same price, but neither of them support mini-led and I'm forced to go higher if I want to calibrate mini-led. My workflow is editing, soft proofing and then printing on Epson P-900 or in the lab my personal photo work. Previously I had older Macbook with the conventional LCD where I used Calibrite ColorChecker Display to calibrate it. So I'm left with a debate whenever it would be good enough to use my old Calibrite and do the fine-tuning or go with full blown display calibration with the new Calibrite Display Pro HL and whener it's worth spending on Calibrite Display Pro HL when I have the less advance model.
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
with ColorChecker Display you are unable to measure white point for fine tuning. This cannot be done with ccProfilier nor can it be done with Calibrite Profilier software. It is a software cap based on the device. What it comes down to is, are you able to get good, matching or close to matching colors now. If so keep what you have and continue what you do, if not you might need another solution.
@max.zelinski

@@ArtIsRight you are absolutely right, I could not use ccProfilier and Calibrite Profilier to measure the white point, but I could do that reliably with DisplayCAL (calibration tab). Just leaving this for anyone trying to use the Calibrite ColorChecker Display to fine tune their Apple XDR display.

Fantastic video. But I am getting stuck somehow... I have Mac Studio running the latest Sonoma and the latest Calibrite Profiler (1.2.8) and if I select the P3 profile as earlier in the video and say 100 luminance my actual luminance when I come to read it on the Profiler software is way below that, around 80, and as the profile has been set previously I cannot adjust the brightness. There also seems to be nowhere to get the x and y readings from the Profiler software as we did on the older version to the Calibrite software so I cannot do the Fine Tuning as before, so I have to just click next and do the calibration without being anywhere neat the 100 luminance value. Does this mean my calibrations will be wrong? I'd be interested to hear if I may be doing something incorrectly!

Hey there :). Do you can see better results with Spyder X2 Ultra? Or do you prefer Calibrite Display Plus HL over Spyder X2 Ultra? :)
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 11 ай бұрын
Better is irrelevant because for these devices verification is done via the program that create the profile. As far as sensor and engineering goes, hand down, I would choose Calibrite / X-Rite any day of Spyder. Here's a quick low down on Spyder devices regardless of generation. The spectral / EDR data, which is needed to run proper calibration on various display backlight tech for Spyder is stored on a ROM Chip on the device, this cannot be upgraded. Calibrite / X-Rite on the other hand is stored in the software and with this when new display tech comes out, if the sensor is capable of measuring said backlight, these data can be upgraded via software. With Spyder you would just have to put in more money and buy a new device. So for any mini led display, I would choose Calibrite Display Pro HL or Display Plus HL any day. If testament of time is anything, X-Rite i1Display Pro was released more than a decade back and is still sold today and can measure all new displays tech up till now with the exception of miniLED backlight. In this time frame Spyder has release 3 new devices. So if one calculate the pricing in totality, one would pay more choosing with Spyder over time. And even if one generation of upgraded is skipped in the 3 gen release, the price that one would pay is about the same or more than Calibrite / X-Rite. Long-term the math does not really add up. And you also have an inferior overall sensor especially when it comes to darker tones and details.

It'd be great to learn why or for how long we should trust a calibrator that may cost an order of magnitude less than a monitor factory-calibrated with expensive measuring devices? I don't see much discussion about whether or how long the relatively cheap calibrator stays calibrated or true in its measurements.
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
There's a lot to unpack with many wrong premise. Factory calibration are to a reference standard that is not any of our computer. None of our computer output references standards, hardware, software, drivers, all changes the image output. All displays must be factory calibrated just how much effort is done at the factory and the quality of the panel. These instrument is a great and economical way to bring any computer graphical output as close to spec as possible. True is relative, as far as how long these calibration last, these are software calibrated display and they will only last as long as the display remain constant. With everything there's degradation, burn-in period and decay. That is why it is recommend to recalibrate every 2 - 4 weeks. So these devices are not meant to mimic factory calibration but rather reference calibration.
@ssp3nc3r
@ssp3nc3r Жыл бұрын
@@ArtIsRight Hey, thanks for the reply! I didn't mean how long the calibration would last so much as how long we should expect the calibration instrument (e.g., calibrate display plus HL) to measure exactly the same way over time. And regarding monitors, the Pro Display XDR, for example, does have reference modes; I would think they are factory calibrated on those reference modes.

The pro can still calibrate high nits display but won't be able to profile in HDR REC 2020. Also at this point in time there are various reference mode that can activate the XDR function but none of them are technically HDR reference mode and Apple has been extremely careful not to put this in. In addition to this, there are specific triggers to activate XDR / HDR functions that are not yet available in most calibration apps except for a few of the highend - pro variety when linked to any Apple XDR display. Simply put HDR for content creation even on Apple Displays is still the Wild West.
