Long overdue focus on the music of Trish Keenan (RIP) and James Cargill of Broadcast. Ran from 1996-2011 with the passing of Keenan. Just released new archival release of new music out on Warp Records called "Spell Blanket".

Was fortunate to catch Broadcast live in Toronto in 2009 while they were touring that album they made with Focus Group. It was at the height of my semi-obsession with the band and they were a powerhouse and heavier sounding than I expected. What a thrill at the time. No doubt that many of a newer generation got into Delia Derbyshire and bands like White Noise because of Trish Keenan.

yeah i don't know if they didn't come to chicago much or if i just missed them during that era, would have been a good show no doubt

Nice, didn't know you were a fan. I just looked up the tour history and apparently I saw them much earlier than I thought, Nov 10 2005. But good point about Derbyshire and their connection to them. Certainly spread awareness on all that 60s stuff.

I appreciate you for spreading Broadcast's music. They are probably my favorite band/duo and even though I'm a bit selfish and kind of like that not many people know them just because of how personal their music is to me, I believe they are ridiculously slept on and their music deserves to be more known. Trish's legacy needs to be kept alive.

I couldn't agree more! and we're much closer to the release of that last and final archival release. Thanks for checking in

Great band - I saw them live twice. ATP 2001 and at the Irish Centre on their local patch in Birmingham where I got to chat to Trish afterwards. A wonderful talent - sadly missed.

Yes! Love the Spell Blanket archival release and am here for anything Broadcast. I have not listened to some of those compilations referenced as I've pretty much stuck to their proper albums up until now. Particularly Future Crayon. I'd recommend revisiting Witch Cults as I think it is pretty great. James and Trish keep Julian from going overboard on the esoteric that he tends to do with some of the solo Focus Groop records. All good though.

Hey there, there are a good amount of fans of this band. Still think their legacy is growing. I do need another spin of Witch Cults as well as Berberian Sound Studio (which I had to edit out due to copyright issue). Both of those records are cut from the same cloth.

Always enjoy your overviews of a band. Believe it or not, I’m not that familiar with broadcast. I mean, I’ve heard bits and pieces from albums that people have played for me, but I never really took the plunge. But that’s why this format is so vital to music and record collectors. Cheers!

Hey Shawn. Well their music is out there. I think you might dig the Noise Made by People as a good place to start. It's very subdued and warm with that late 60s feel. Very haunting and beautiful

Hey Jason. Yes, this band was a treasure. Around for a good while about 15 years but there was plenty more in the tank.

I always liked Broadcast. It's nice to see your tribute/appreciation video to Trish.

I don't normally get too effected by they deaths of people I've never met, but when Trish went it was so sad and seemingly random.
@seekingathread3 ай бұрын
I definitely hear you. It did feel just like that. I remember all the sudden hearing she was sick and then she was gone. I remember speaking about her to people but no one was aware. I think her legend will grow.
@53puskas533 ай бұрын
Thank you for saying that, I think she was, and is, a beautiful artist.

I am fortunate to have seen them 4 times. One of the most memorable live show I saw was in 2000 at the Magic Stick in Detroit. There is a video of that show up on the KZbin. Nice review and a proper tribute to one of the greatest artists/bands that would have continued to make incredible music.
@seekingathread3 ай бұрын
Nice Aaron. Looks like I saw them in 2005 according to the internet, not 2010 like I thought. It was a different thing when they played live no doubt but the studio psychedelia translated well to the live setting. I saw that on KZbin too!

work and non work was one of the first records i ever bought on ebay, unfortunately don't have it anymore. maybe broadcast was closer to pram in the early days and became more like stereoab later? all three certainly left their mark. that children of alice is very good as well.
@seekingathread3 ай бұрын
I think they live in that style no doubt, but I think what she was doing was still unique to their band. Perhaps they started out indebted to other bands of the time but became their own thing. Some of their b-sides and out takes are just as strong as the albums too.

Appreciating this Dom! But I guess I'll be the first say I'm underwhelmed by the Spell Blanket demos. For me, hearing the group in fragments like this pushes the artifice (or something) of their particular backward-looking sound into harsher relief. My favorite Broadcast record is Extended Play Two---the sweet spot of the more fleshed-out, composed song stuff that would become Tender Buttons, with some of the mystery haze that surrounded the early material. I hope the earlier demos from that period speak to me more, but I'm thinking they're not a 'demos band' to my taste, for the reason above.
@seekingathread3 ай бұрын
Interesting Manuel. I found myself immersed in the fragmentary style of these, which obviously wasn't the intention. Taken as a whole I think the whole thing delivers as a mysterious, ghostly statement. And informs much of what they did on their studio records.

Hey Dom, waiting on Spell Blanket and Distant Call, probably arriving together this fall. I’m happy that James is releasing these demos. “Unchanging Window” into “Chord Simple” on The Future Crayon comp is just sublime, as is nearly everything else they did. I wouldn’t turn down an original but all the Warp reissues sound good to me. Trish’s unfortunate passing means the mystique will probably live on forever. Thanks for showcasing Broadcast! Cheers.
@seekingathread3 ай бұрын
Hey Russell, it's been long overdue to do this video. These 2 new releases are the perfect reason to. She sounds so alive to me on this new release, but ghostly. It really feels like a new album albeit in pretty stripped down, perhaps unfinished fashion. There's a lot of variety on it too. Glad you dug that

nice summary, dom. my buddy that worked the rock vinyl section at the hollywood amoeba turned me on to them in 2009, and i picked up the collab w the focus group, then to future crayon, then to everything else. i was hesitant about the new spell blanket thinking i didn't need it, but you sold it pretty hard, so i'm gonna grab it. i share the same adoration.
@seekingathread3 ай бұрын
haha well if you're already a fan I think you'll be really happy with this. It's beautiful and presents a lot of the different sides to their music. Hope you enjoy
