n this video, I am working on a soldier figure study of a Sergeant of the 151st Pennsylvania infantry as he would have appeared during the summer of 1863. This depiction is partially based off of “the Harvest of Death” series of photos that have so long been a mystery in the Gettysburg Photography world. Recent research (which I happen to strongly agree with) has pointed to this Iconic series of photos as having been taken near the McPherson woodlot where General John F. Reynolds was killed. The area that the series of photographs cover, is the ground where both the 2nd Wisconsin and the 151st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiments fought and suffered heavy casualties on the morning and afternoon of July 1st 1863. This Sergeant is wearing a pair of canvas and leather sporting shoes which was a popular form of footwear in the Union Army of the Potomac during this period of the Civil War that were privately purchased at local sutlers who followed the Army. A single camp shoe of the same design, appears laying on the ground in "the Harvest of Death" Series. This soldier is also wearing a Union Infantry dress frock coat which was a common uniform worn by the Union Army. What is noteworthy, is that this Sergeant’s coat has a brass bracket on the shoulder to secure a brass shoulder scale which was an adornment that would have been worn during Dress Parade or special ceremonies. There are known studio images of members of the 151st Pennsylvania wearing these shoulder scales. A brass shoulder scale bracket can also be seen attached to the shoulder of the frock coat of one of the dead union soldiers in “the Harvest of Death” series which can be seen under magnification.
