What a wonderful and finally fully comprehensive video on the mediums…so confusing and so hard to find a proper explanation, but you did it and so very well! You went to a lot of work to put this together and I thank-you. I am subscribing even though I don’t see any recent videos but I am hoping you will continue this channel (which I just happened to find). 😊

You have what I NEED. You truly EXPLAIN, in the way I understand. I feel like I am listening to a Historical PowerPoint...I am understanding a lot better the way you are giving the information. Plus, you talk not to slowly and not too fast. You stay on subject at hand. You do not go into a talk about your family and friends. I Love You! This information will greatly improve my pieces!!!!!

Hi Johwey! Thank you for such a clear, comprehensive and non-confusing presentation on a subject I've been pondering since getting back into art making recently! I had a very old ~ maybe 15 years! container of Liquitex Matt medium, which amazingly still adheres very well, but I was thinking about trying something else. Thanks to your presentation, I'm going to see how the gel medium works. I also loved learning a little about the science of the polymers and viscosities. Great video!!

Thank you for taking the time to break this down🙏🏾👏🏾. This is a great reference🤩😍😎. I prefer the extra heavy matte medium, but have been thinking about trying the extra heavy semi-gloss. Have you worked with the Golden extra heavy semi-gloss?
@johwey Жыл бұрын
Thank you for appreciating the video! 🥰 And for letting me know your preference. I find it interesting that you prefer the extra heavy gel. I have encountered artists who prefer the heavy gel, but this is the first time someone told me they prefer the extra heavy gel! 😂😊 I haven’t tried any of the semi-gloss yet. Trying not to buy any more products! 😂

@@johwey I ran out of modeling paste and it was the only thick medium I had to put through a stencil (not wanting to buy another product when I had a barely used tub gathering dust 😉😂). It worked out pretty well! When I added in pigment or acrylic paint before I used it, I was able to get the effect I needed.👏🏾👏🏾😀

Thank you so much for this video! I very much enjoyed it! I was just trying to figure out what to use when it comes to gluing heavy craft paper together when I make boxes. I will be going with the Liquitex Matte soft gel. Very interested to find out if it keeps ripples out after it dries. So far I’m just using art glitter, dries clear, designer adhesive. thank you again! All of the information about the polymers was great. Nothing made sense until you started using the science.
@johwey8 ай бұрын
Acrylic mediums do have some water content, but it should be fine as long as you burnish. But to be honest, when I make boxes, I actually prefer to use a glue stick. It's faster. 😅

This is one of the most helpful videos I've ever found on KZbin. Thank you so much!! I have one remaining question--For soft gel medium when used as a top coat, do you find that matte or gloss is better about hiding brush strokes when dry? Or are they about the same in that regard?
@johwey14 күн бұрын
@@benjaminwest6657 I’m glad you found the video helpful. Matte medium generally does a better job of hiding brushstrokes because it has a more even, flat finish. Gloss medium creates a shiny surface which tends to enhance the appearance of brushstrokes and textures.

Excellent video! So informative and so professionally executed, and the demonstrations are also very helpful. Thank you! Ps....have you ever used methyl cellulose (that is, archival quality wallpaper paste) as an adhesive for paper collage? I've just been reading about this and the claim is that it is cost-effective, ph-neutral and does the job well.

This is great. Very clear and thorough. I was wondering how to get a color wash on top of glued materials. If the gel repels water you can't use a wash.. Can you add acrylic paint to the medium?
@johwey9 ай бұрын
Yes, in fact its primary purpose is to be used with acrylic paint, to change the properties of the paint like its viscosity, for example. 😊

Thank you for your concise video. I am new to using my hand painted deli wrap papers in collage and would I like to layer them to create depth. I like when the sheets become somewhat transparent as I layer them allowing the base sheet to show through the top. Is gloss better than matte gel medium to get this effect? In other words which one allows for more transparency?
@johwey Жыл бұрын
In terms of matte vs gloss, I've only ever used matte (fluid) medium with deli paper and other similar delicate papers. It works well such that whatever marks you created on the deli paper shows clearly while the deli paper itself becomes almost (if not entirely) invisible (so you can clearly see whatever is underneath). I am in love with that effect. I prefer to use fluid medium with deli paper rather than gel medium just because the viscosity of the fluid medium works better with delicate papers. I hope this helps! :)

I noticed at the end of this video, matte medium was used to glue tissue paper with highly reflective gold stripes. Wouldn't it dull the gold? What would be the best solution to preserve the shine of the gold stripes? Gloss medium?
@johwey Жыл бұрын
If you want to preserve the gold foil finish, yes, it's better to use gloss medium. 🙂

Is it possible to just add a lil water to a gel medium to obtain fluid medium ?
@johwey6 күн бұрын
You can add a small amount of water to acrylic medium to make it more fluid but not too much that it significantly weakens the medium's binding properties. So if you're requiring a very fluid medium, it's better to use the actual fluid acrylic medium instead of adding a lot of water to a regular medium.
