I first encountered Nino's work when I was in junior high school in the 1970's. I loved his illustrations in "The Time Machine" and "The invisible man". Both were black and white illustrations but it was lovely work. I can recognize his style from a mile away. Unique!

Nick, I grew up on Alex Nino not from early Bronze DC horror but from the illustrated, uncolored, "Now Age Books" that were paperbacks produced by Vincent Fago. I still have them and remember Alex Nino's work on "War of the Worlds." I was 9 or 10 years old but his work scared the crap out of me. Thanks for posting this! Do you have one on Alfredo Alcala? He is another early Bronze Age great.

not yet...I haven't done a spotlight on Alcala yet but someday :) I will look out for a copy of the Now Age Books!

I agree. Wasn't familiar with his work but the beauty in the details is definitely worth mentioning. Will look more into his work and thanks for sharing!

thanks....you won't be disappoint seeing his works....great hidden gems and most of his works are not in the superhero titles.

nice. Suffice to say, the artwork in Silver age books had its own feel that I miss nowadays. ha.. Shows our age, my friend. Btw, I'm liking the Artist Showcase videos you are doing. Just watched the Tom Sutton one aswell. You are inspiring me to do some as well. I'm thinking my 1st one will be showcasing one of my fav's, Nick Cardy.

that would be great...I look forward to see your Nick Cardy spotlight!

I remember Nino primarily from the Warren magazines of the time....his robots & machinery are KILLER. :-) I like the "Simonson/Sienkiewicz" descriptor. I totally get where you're coming from. Good one, bud. Y'all know I'm a hard-core Conan reader from the 70s and, with all due respect for Big John Buscema, how I would've LOVED for Nino to have done a year or two on the title. To coin a term from my friend Nick: WOWZA!!! LOL Thanks for sharing, buddy....
@etanick18 жыл бұрын
thanks John! No doubt, his robots and machinery drawing are so detailed and brilliant. It is not every day that you can find an artist than can draw beautiful jungle landscape, futuristic, or any periods.....Alex is so special because he can do it all and I will show more of other examples in future videos.

Yes indeed.....would've liked to have seen his take on Tarzan, too.... :-) Looking forward to the next part.

Man he's really good. I'm gonna check out more of his work now, thanks Nick. What ever happened to these types of amazing artists? Did they not follow the Image way of drawing and get phased out of the comic industry? I wish an artist like this was working on the Boom comics like Big Trouble in Little China and Escape from Nee York. Artist today don't have the creativity they only follow what they learned in school :(

The problem with most artists today is that their per-page compensation rate from the big 2 is so low that they don't story-tell; they take each page and make it as appealing on a stand-alone to permit the page to attract the highest sale price on the OA market. I get it -- artists aren't being compensated appropriately from the publisher causing them to put their pecuniary interests first -- but we readers pay the price by getting nice individual visuals with plenty of "bling" but no flowing, visual story.

hard to say why these artists didn't get more works....it would be nice to see interviews of these artists today on what happened and why things didn't pan out BIGGER. Some are still around from what I can tell.

If anyone is familiar with John Byrne's work, you can see many similarities in their style. Byrne even admits in his own forum that he is a huge Alex Nino fan.

I think most would be fan of Nino if they look at his arts. The newer generation of readers aren't expose enough to many great artists.

thanks! so many talented Filipino artists that got to work in the comic industry in the 70's...it is too bad, most didn't get a chance to spread their wings to bigger, more popular titles and books.

great artist,i especially liked a lot the last one you saw with Conan!Check,if you didn' t it already,the portfolio he made in 1978 named the dark suns of gruaga and the 1976 portfolio fantasy worlds,both are outstanding with a ltr of details and very wild imagination!

An adaptation of Harlan Ellison's short story " Repent Harlequin Said The Tick Tock Man" introduced me to Alex Nino. Two other Filipino favorites are Gerry Talaoc ( Loved his work on Phantom Stranger) and Jesse Santos ( Gold Key : Dr Spektor and Dagar the Invincible). An artist I think you will enjoy is Mitchell Hooks, check out his 1950s-60s paperback cover art, treasure finding to say the least.

Thanks so much for this video, especially the Conan story. I don't think Alex did many "main character" books at all, so this is a super treat. More memorable than the hero books, though, are his amazing layouts and designs! He has a unique and graphic approach that few other comics artists have ever approached. Interesting that you mentioned Walt Simonson. I never thought of it before, but he is somewhat similar. Also, Howard Chaykin springs to mind. I love almost ALL the great Filipino artists: Nestor Redodo, Rudy Nebres, Alfredo Alcala. All giants as far as I'm concerned. I bought Alex Nino's "Dark Suns of Gruaga" portfolio from way back when, as well as Redondo's "Man, Maiden & Myth" set of plates. And of course, Alex did so many wonderful B&W mags for Warren. But not Redondo, who only contributed spottily to the B&W Conan book. The latter included several painted covers, and Redondo did do a couple of those for Warren. I see that you have other reviews, as well, and I will watch those videos next. Thanks again!

Not my cup of tea. I am not a fan of Walt Simonson either, so it does not surprise me. Too each his own when it comes to art.

so be it :) the internet would be a better place if people can respect others' preferences but we all know that is not the case heh?
@speeddemonmodelshop74608 жыл бұрын
yea - too bad isn't it. The internet does not seem to be the place for respect. I enjoy watching all of your videos because you have so much passion for the art. I do not always like some of the artists that you do, but I still enjoy looking at the art that you show. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone has a different eye - LOL. Keep up the great videos Nick. I have seen so many artists that I have never seen before on your channel, and I always enjoy to see new artists. Even if it is not my cup of tea :)
