Yeah, this video was cool because he seemed to just be himself. I find that in other videos and audio interviews I have heard with him throughout the year, it has always seemed like he was putting on a front or trying a little too hard to portray a character. Great artist. Definitely a pioneer. It is refreshing to hear a tattoo artist talking about how he wants the tattoo to age well. These days, waayyyyy too many of the new artists are just focused on getting pictures of crazy fresh pieces for their portfolios. They never showcase healed work...and they tattoo stuff that they absolutely HAVE to know won't hold up over the years. They just want that picture of the fresh tattoo. It is sad. I have pieces that haven't held up..even after 3 or 4 years. Yet, I have pieces that have held up wonderfully for almost 20 years. Of course, the ones that have held up the best have nice bold outlines.

I just find it lovely to see that he doesn't use as much 'vaseline' as other artists do. i find working with less 'vaseline' easier to work. You don't smoosh things up, you know. I like my skin to be as dry as possible when i work on it, just a little bit green soap or antibacterial water on a whipe is as good as . . . not to mention better ;)

you dont go to a guy like Mark Mahoney for a coverup. I'm sure he could do it, he's a master at the craft, but give him the respect of some fresh skin and free artistic reign. BTW - you should call Shamrock Social Club in LA if you're serious about getting work.

That armrest is dope! If this was recorded in 2013 per Cali state law he can’t have those pigment bottles on the table, can’t have the paper towels where they are, and should not be using spray bottles. Other than that he’s actually pretty on point. Nothing to cry about. I mean Kat Von D used to tattoo barefoot. That alone is the grossest shit ever. Now stfu.

Louis shit! Scrub up and glove up! If you can be concerned about the placement of the tattoo and its longevity, shouldn't you be just as worried about foreign bodies from underneath your wedding ring being introduced into the tattoo process?

if his hands are clean and an no skin as been punctured whats the big deal?.... gloves don't protect the client, they are designed for the person using them... ya know PPE "Personal Protective Equipment"

well you right , but to lay down you machine and then take of your glasses with the same gloves you just used i would say thats skin been punctured . and lays them on his pants - i think you get what sweeney coming from

This is a guy who worked with ed hardy, schooled freddycorbin, he might be the original person to do sugar skull tattoos,he's been doing this since the seventys, he's old school, heknowswhat he's doing,yeah I hate when other artists I'm working with answerthephone with therewith gloves,
@MrLanzac3 жыл бұрын
The gloves and shit is more to protect the artist from the clients blood and shit than keeping foreign germs and shit out , I mean sterile stuff is important but the main thing is not catching or spreading blood borne pathogens. Plus back in the day most guys went bare hand and even then it was rare for infections and shit.
I have only know of Mark Mahoney for about 15-20 minutes, however i seems like the serial killer of art. like if you took ted bundy and he had free roam to plan and execute a murder, hear and see his passion in his art.

you gotta realize, some of the old school guys like mark, follow the letter of the law, and don't past that, it's just how it is... but its legal and as long as his hands are clean, it dosen't matter... gloves don't protect the client, they are designed for the person using them... ya know PPE "Personal Protective Equipment"

hehe dirty mahoney. respect to oldtimers but they dont have any sense for hygiene. like for instance, prepping skin with stencilstuff wothout gloves, does not look like the armrest has been protected against ink and blood. and also he takes off his glasses in the end with dirty gloves. those glasses better be disposable homie!
@OscarOffTheCuff9 жыл бұрын

Pretty weak tattoo for an artist spotlight. His wife/rep should at least have picked something people could identify.
@inkdreaper8746 жыл бұрын
Would have to agree with both sides of the fence on this. Amazing artist, but poor hygiene level. It's scary. Spraying green soap directly onto the client's skin is also a bad idea. If the client has hepatitis, the back spray from the green soap hitting the skin can mist into the air and get on the artist's equipment and work station, not to mention the artist's eyes and skin. Sterilization is a huge part of being a tattoo artist.
