During this virtual program, meet artist Shawanda Corbett (b. 1989), whose pottery, painting, performance, film, and photography reframe notions of gender, race, and the “complete body.” Raised in Mississippi and now based in the U.K., the self-described “cyborg artist” draws on influences ranging from Japanese and West African ceramic traditions and jazz music to cyborg theory and her lived experience as a differently able-bodied Black woman.
Corbett joins NMWA Director of Education and Interpretation Deborah Gaston for a wide-ranging conversation to share insights into her multidisciplinary creative practice, affinity for music, and desire to foster empathy and inclusivity.
