Join us for the latest installment of our Best Practices series featuring Cohort 1's multi-faceted artist and curator, Joel Murray. This series explores the artistic background of an artist, what drives their work, and a dive into his curatorial process with Château Show an ongoing curatorial project in a historic mansion in Dallas, Texas.
Joel Murray, born in Denver, Colorado, is a visual artist, curator, and educator currently based in Dallas, Texas. He curates the annual group exhibition, Chateau Show, in East Dallas. Joel’s paintings weave together narratives from news, art history, stand-up comedy specials, and animal imagery, blending them with his unique codex of symbols. His work presents non-linear stories that merge real and imagined objects, placed in altered versions of pre-existing source material.
In addition to his artistic practice, Joel has held educational roles at The Warehouse Dallas and has been a visiting educator at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Meadows Museum, and Dallas Contemporary. He currently teaches Drawing at the University of Texas, Arlington. Joel’s latest exhibition, "Everyday Magic, Everyday Music," was showcased at Gallery 12.26 in 2023. He holds a BFA from Metropolitan State University, Denver, CO, and an MFA from Clemson University, Clemson, SC.
