This guide is AMAZING! I’ve seen so many tutorials on this and no one actually explains how to see value in color. They skip right over it. Thank you for this!!!

may i know what is the name of the app you used to find the value?

Hi there! I just used a print out of a gray scale and value finder I found on Google 😊 Sometimes I use my iPad. On there, I use Procreate to see my colors in gray scale more easily.
@valeriachilders2 жыл бұрын
Great video. how did you adjust the white balance on procreate? thanks!
@JennaRiceArt Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’m glad you found it helpful. I didn’t adjust the white balance on my iPad before using this technique. I guess I just trusted in the screen and it worked pretty well.

I feel like an idiot but how does finder help you determine value, when paint is opaque?
@cactus17394 жыл бұрын
So, do you have a recomendation find value by only eyes... I wanna sketch with finelinner pen.. quickly sketch... so..I really wanna find value of 2 color in my view to decide how many cross harching for that color area... (Sorry if my English bad, English is not my native langugue!)
@JennaRiceArt4 жыл бұрын
No problem at all! I completely understand. Cross hatching can be pretty difficult at first. The more you practice using values, the easier they are for your eyes to see. Perhaps I’ll make a video about that sometime. North hank you for watching!

What is the use of knowing a color’s value? That’s a genuine question btw :)
@MD-tj4br Жыл бұрын
Did you watch the video on mute?
@caro428410 ай бұрын
No@@MD-tj4br but I see that instead of bringing a constructive explanation and answering a genuine question from a beginner, you clearly rather use your precious time to a cynical comment. Well that’s a choice. “Mastering values in black and white is very important to mastering values in colors”, I understand that, but why in the first place do we need to know the values of the different colors? How does it help the artist?
@MD-tj4br10 ай бұрын
@@caro4284 if you want to read that deeply into my comment …ok. But what you are asking is specifically addressed in the video.

How do you make these saturated colors lighte or darken since they tend to repeat.

Hi, thanks for watching! I used mainly paint directly from the tubes, yet I honk I may have added a little white to some in some places to lighten the value

You are better off color sampling your color with the color picker then look at the L in LAB results to get your value. It's a simple enough conversion from a 1-100 (L value) to 1-10 (paint) value scale. It would be necessary to adjust the brightness so that you have something really pure white in the shot (best would be TI-white since you're painting and that's your brightest value.) So that spot of TI-white in the pic will read like 95-100 in the L value after your adjustment. You really screwed your experiment up by taking your value scale photo in a different shot, then boosted the yellow to 10, why!? I guarantee you that yellow is not a 10.

Thanks for your input! You have good points. For me, it’s not always about being technical - I just go with how I see things. It’s more about the end result of the painting
