It's just result of how music is distributed nowadays. You don't need to walk to record store to buy a single or wait for radio to start playing the song to score number one. The songs are immediately available to everyone which is why they debut and fall fast. In Taylor's case cardigan, willow and fortnight all had albums drop at the same time which killed the singles pretty quick because everyone was streaming the albums

For many decades, the Billboard Hot 100 was the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. This meant that a single could ONLY chart if it was available for sale in a physical format like 7" or 12" vinyl, CD or cassette combined with radio airplay. Album tracks could get airplay and become popular, but they were ineligible to chart. Prime examples are Madonna's "Into the Groove" and Mariah's "Breakdown." Both received massive airplay, but neither could chart on its own because individual singles were never released in the US. "Into the Groove" was the B-side on the "Angel" 12 " single while "Breakdown" was combined with "My All" for single release. Both songs would probably have been official number one singles and raised their tallies. 😎

That's true...Material Girl, Causing A Commotion, Express Yourself, Cherish, I'll Remember and Frozen should have all been #1 but landed at #2. Tbh Holiday and Into The Groove should have been #1 as well. I think the streaming era ruins this cause now we have artists with forgettable hits hitting number 2 and falling off the next week. There's no longevity or quality there. Physical copies was the time that made real music stars !

It's so ridiculous to call every Swift album an "era". One year is NOT an era. An "era" were Rhythm Nation 1814 with No 1s in three different years or Thriller, by the way all physical sales. Era or not it doesn't erase that she's one of the biggest and most successful artists of all time. Era nowadays doesn't last for years, it's not Swift's fault that streaming era has killed post album singles. Eras tour alone shows her massive popularity and cultural impact. Not many artists can sell out the biggest arenas existing for multiple dates across every continent

I really didn't listen to Caution, and I cannot say I am so much into Rnb songs. But RnB, especially Mariah RnB style is so late 90s or beginning 2000s oriented. That's why her teams didn't want to promote. In 2015, Madonna came up with good albums which at least for me ghosttown should no1, but for aging America ignore older artists. Obviously they will because this will get her the most attention, and that’s where they don’t think that she can still pull a number one out . I believe her team doesn’t really care for her to get another one , and also her responses when asked about passing the Beatles she’s really humble. You should def listen to caution because it wasn’t just focused on r&b and it was totally different than 2000s , her songs had pop in it and classic r&b it was both not just strictly r&b. And to say r&b is so behind time is crazy. Look at sza she’s striving, just listen to caution you won’t be disappointed
