I used Artlist music for over 6 months, in 28 videos and 6 short films! This video is an update review of the royalty-free music licensing service after downloading 50+ songs and many, many sound effects. I used to use epidemic sound, so in some ways I will be comparing Artlist to epidemic sound, and giving suggestions on how Artlist can improve in areas where they may currently be weak.

Hey Joe. I looked into the "forever" aspect of using your licensed Artlist music, and, as it turns out, (according to their FAQ page on their website) you can only use their music forever (after your subscription expire) IF you purchased the UNLIMITED package or ENTERPRISE, not the Personal package. If you've already addressed this, you may delete this comment. Just wanted to be helpful because I appreciate your video. Here is word for word what their website says as of this moment, "With a yearly Unlimited License plan, the music and/or SFX you download are yours to use forever, even if you don’t renew your subscription. If you sign up for a Personal license, the rules are a bit different. The Personal License will only cover your use of the assets while the account is active in videos you post/publish to channels listed on your account. The videos posted during your active Personal subscription are yours to share and monetize forever, even after your subscription expires." Hope this is helpful to everyone. I think the best investment is the Unlimited plan or higher.

This was super informative, and I'm glad I came across this video. I had no idea that you could use the songs after your subscription became inactive. That's really huge, and honestly I could never imagine going back to Epidemic sound now!

I'm torn between Artist & Storyblocks. Both allow you to keep & use the music even past your subscription, so they both seem like a good deal. Although Storyblocks offers Templates for Video as Well, so it seems like you get more bang for the buck

I also wish artlist had a suggested music section based on tracks you already have saved/downloaded...they do have similar tracks listed per song but that's not as convenient.

I have to say that personally, after spending many days and many hours on searching for music on Artlist I don't rather find many tracks that I would find spectacular, hitting the right tune for me. So I agree that it's more for the adds and more upbeat thempo. And yes, more relaxed music is there as well, but for me it's not up to my standards. So far, in terms of music I'm after Epidemic Sound and Musicbed (I haven't use dthe latter yet as they have ridiculous conditions and not sure I want to get involved with them for that reason) are definite leaders. And for me it is also a big deal when I have to click several times to save something. I spend a lot of time on finding the right music for my projects, that includes downloading many tracks and trying to feel them with the visual layer in editting program, so it takes a lot of work by itself. Epidemic sound has greates workflow in my opinion and I love the stems options which I used many times.

I've worked with several licensing services as an artist and on the business side. On that copyright issue, that's usually not the licensing service's fault at all, nor is it Content ID glitch. It's also just about never a "false" claim. It's usually a case where the artist has misunderstood their agreement with the licensing service and allowed their music to be Content ID administered by another entity without telling the licensing service. The licensing service, being totally unaware of this, doesn't have any control over it. That happens with ALL licensing services. After it happens, most services will advise the artist or their management/label of the problem and they'll have to figure out whether to leave their music with that third party administrator or not. Some licensing services will not allow Content ID registered music in their catalog. Others do and handle the Content ID administration themselves while others do an "opt-in" to their administration. In those "opt-in" cases, the site will annotate the songs that opted-in as "Content ID cleared" and the others are "license at your own risk", meaning you may have to submit a dispute. This mess has become a growing problem after TikTok, Facebook and others got their versions of content copyright detection. It's been a real headache for the licensing companies. Bottom line, copyright detection has been around a long time, but it's never gotten its act together. Too many variations, misunderstandings, and not enough standardization.

I somewhat agree. I spend a little less time searching on epidemic sound. But they have a sh_tty license and I simply don't want to put up with that. Artlist simply has the best licensing system and having anything other than that is a total dealbreaker to me. Copyright law in my country is very complicated and I CAN NOT have that kind of problem. I think the search function on Artlist is going to improve though. As for my kind of favorite music, I had no problem whatsoever, and I have checked in with Artlist before buying a subscription (used your link hehe) for several months. Only when I had enough songs on my list that I liked, I said to myself: Okay, it's worth it. And I found a lot of moody dark songs too. Not at all only commercial. My trick is to look at the titles and covers. Maybe I just got a talent for that but I judge a song by the cover and often it helps...
@JosephMartin

Oh heck yeah! The license is hands down the best thing about artlist (even though there’s plenty of other good things too). They’ve also been releasing a bunch of updates recently, and now you can find similar songs etc. Thanks for using my link! Glad you’re enjoying it.

Thank you for your videos, Joe. My question is simple. Would you say that Artlist seems to favor the content creator, more than the musician? I mean: having the rights to use a track you've downloaded as much as you like, even after your subscription had expired, seems like a rough deal to the artist, or am I wrong?
@JosephMartin
@JosephMartin 3 жыл бұрын
There probably isn't much difference because artlist only allows you to pay by the year, but I have no idea how well their artists are compensated or how that system works so I can't really answer this question. sorry.

@shahidwiggins
@shahidwiggins Жыл бұрын
The thing with epidemic sound is that they make it so you can never get rid of your subscription. Because if you have videos up, say from two years ago, that has their music and you let your subscription go, you will get a copyright, strike! And for that alone, rules them out has ever been a possibility for me.
@JosephMartin
@JosephMartin Жыл бұрын
Hi Shahid! Fortunately this is a misconception about Epidemic - any videos you post while you have an active subscription are cleared forever, even when your subscription runs out! You just can’t post any NEW videos using their music without an active subscription. Hopefully this helps, lmk if you have any questions.

False copyright claims on paying epidemic subscribers have been known to occur on rare occasions. If this happens, it’s a quick process to contest the claim using epidemic’s built in tool (for commercial license users) or youtube’s copyright contention interface. I made a video about how to fix it if this happens! kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4LPZWivq7FnZtE

I am thinking about getting it for my channel. I do have one question! Does each song have its own license or is there one Artlist license for all songs? Example: If i have 3 different videos with different music on all 3 videos and I get a copy right claim on them. Do I have to go to each music title and download each license agreement per song choice? I hope that makes sense.
@JosephMartin
@JosephMartin 3 жыл бұрын
Sure thing! Yes, each song is individually licensed so you would have to download a different license for every unique song if they were to be claimed. However, if you used the same song in three different videos it would just be one license for all three videos, because the license is issued to you as an individual, not specific projects. Hope this helps!

@@JosephMartin yes this was exactly what I was looking for thank you. Ok one dumb question. The music you choose to download can be saved to your computer correct? I just saw files going from artlist site to a video. I didn't see anything going from artlist to a saved computer file for later use.
