My father gave me a book called "Junior Karate" when I was very young. In that book was a passage that read "The true Karate expert is willing to train a little harder than the rest, that is their biggest secret". That stuck with me both in life and the martial arts.

@@lvl18abilities perfectly valid point. Someone with great kicking ability may start off in "any" art, but I'm sure that at some point, someone will ask that person if they've ever done TKD (and then recommend a school for them to try). To a large degree, though, the path through the arts is the point, not the desire to try to optimize a search for the one best suited to a given body style. That's also dependent upon what one wants to get out of the art. Are you looking to be the best street fighter on the planet? Are you trying to get into MMA and rule that? Or, are you simply out of shape and looking for something that you can do that keeps your interest longer than pushing weights around in a gym... ?

@@lvl18abilities Awesome! Enjoy that art. You will find that as you research arts, you will get around 4 opinions for every person (usually conflicting) on various arts. From the history of a given art, to the specific instructor, to the school and so on. At your age, I'd recommend that you spend time figuring out what it is that you really want to achieve in that art (and the why). Factor in your current body (how flexible you are, what kind of shape you are and so on) as well as where your mind is at (are you able to focus on the material and does it stick?). There are many levels (and I don't mean belts) to these arts, and it can take many years of study to dive into them. If it is 'working' for you and your current goals, fantastic. Spend time really diving into the moves - the theory of the moves, the various applications of the moves and so on. If it is not really working for you, then perhaps looking at some other styles may be what you should do. The more you, as the student, puts into the study of the art, the more you'll get out of it (don't expect things to be hand-fed to you). The more effort you put in, the more it will show and your instructor will recognize this, and 'reward' you with more work to do.. :-)

Absofuckinglutely. Different arts have different strengths, but it's all useless unless you train train train train. I take Wing Chun. I train my ass off every day. My neighbor does TKD 2 nights a week. Wing Chun is better at close range, tkd is better at a medium range. But the sheer fact that I train harder and longer and more often is what would decide that hypothetical sparring match. On the flip side, someone who's been doing karate for 30 years is probably going to beat my ass. It's all about training and willpower! (as a side note, my sifu studied alongside Bruce Lee under Sigung Yip Man, and goddamn the stories I've heard...)

It's not the art, it's the artist. Some systems are better than others, but none are bad. Great question, but not so difficult answer indeed. Once in the late 70s, I asked Sensei Taiji Kase ( who was a Black Belt 3rd DAN at the age of 30) then started Karate Shotokan with Gichin Funakoshi ( father of modern karate) I asked him this same question. His answer was : All Martial Arts are equal. The goal is to reach the top of the mountain, so depends on yourself, which way you wanna take to reach that top, some climb directly, some turn around and step by step up to reach that top. At the end when you reach that top, you find out that you have more to learn. Ouss Sensei Kase. RIP Sensei Taiji Kase, you will always be remembered, but never forgotten. I appreciate this video very much, as it opens up peoples eyes, what is your aim to practice Martial Arts in the First place? and when you got a slight answer, then give it a try, that will last for an hour, for years, or forever.

My favourite thing about this video is that Mr. Dan didn't say that kenpo is the best. He basically turned the question on the viewer and now we are all answering the question in the comments. I didn't start karate to learn stuff for the street. I can do that if I need to. I wouldn't be likely to take a lot of what I learn in karate to a street fight. For me it's competing and fitness. I'm regularly on my hands and knees in a pool of sweat by the end of the warm up and done by the end of the class. I love every minute and my mantra is that when I'm exhausted, the pressure testing begins. I was getting a bit concerned about how tired I was recently and my teacher said to me that the reason I'm still exhausted is because as my fitness increases I have more to give, so I put more energy into the same timeframe. I've lost 2.5 stone since starting.

Great video and I agree with how you broke this down and your analysis. As a lifelong martial artists, age 13-49, I concur. I have a black belt in GoJuRyu from 1993 and few years back I began working on a second one in ShoGoJitsu which is unique combining shotokan, GoJuRyu, and jiu-jitsu. Also as personal trainer with a degree in physical therapy I have had honor of working with several pro boxers and MMA fighters and that was very humbling = they were pros but not level of household names and yet OMG killers and I had no chance playing with them = ring or street. In my 30 years of practice I have handled myself in several real world situations but these guys do so much full contact sparring = they had me easily, yet most humans aren't up for sparring full contact 2-5x per week... Hope this adds value, thanks again + Health, Happiness & Success to you always!

Oh it's absolutely insane the training and conditioning some guys go through. A few years back my instructor was teaching his own set of MMA fights (local matches) and these guys would come to the dojo at 5am to do their conditioning and cross fit, and then he would teach classes all day, then adult classes until 8pm and then the MMA guys would come back and do 2 hours of sparring and training. It's impressive and insane at the same time.

@@ArtofOneDojo It really is more about the school, instructor and like you said what person wants to achieve. We sparred very hard, no points, similar to Kyokushin karate so we learned to hit and get hit = very valuable. But I liked that we still had respect as it wasn't a place where guys tried hurting each other. Came down to fact husband and wife team were amazing - Sensei Dave & Donna ran a small school of probably 30 students max and usually more like 20. I tell people who ask my advice what you said = choose your main goal and then go watch classes and speak with instructors. OSA!

Have done little bit of Ed Parker's Kempo with MMA elements and Krav Maga. Both good arts, horrible teachers. In fact, i commented just to say i agree with you on that 100%. As for the street fighting/self defense aspect, I don't know which art in general would be the most efficient when the opponent(s) and you are alerted and toe-to-toe/ready to go, but I sure know that none would be of any use if you get sucker-attacked/ambushed. Unless someone's lifestyle is special-forces, mercenary, etc so they live-regard civilian life and public appearances as a war field. Of course it depends on those guys' toughness, I mean there's not much you can do if you get your liver stabbed and twisted from behind. And that's frustrating. The human body is a masterpiece, yet a very fragile one. :(

I'll admit that I'm a "keyboard karateka" now. I can barely walk uphill, having retired half a decade ago. I wish I was Yoshimi Inoue, but I'm not. About four decades ago, I accidentally walked into a street fight, two guys beating up anyone who showed up. I was sucker punched, but then dropped one in the street with a side kick in the solar plexus. His buddy stopped short of attacking me seeing his buddy lying on the street trying to catch a breath. I wrote this because I was a second dan and my system did work, but a brown belt in my school got in a traffic 'confrontation' and he said his side kick didn't keep the other guy away, and they got into a typical street-fight 'swing away' fest.

@@ArtofOneDojo I have a 1st degree black belt in Taekwondo and I've been training for a little over a year now in Kenpo Karate. I didn't go to the Kenpo Karate instructor to prove Taekwondo's superiority, I know Taekwondo has defensive gaps in it and I know we are not the greatest when it comes down to punching. But we can out kick most arts and we can be very swift, that's besides the point though. I have trained with what I liked to call a Taekwondo preacher, he basically pumped up the art a lot but I found this to be closed minded ramblings. We had students that trained in boxing which my head instructor had him teach us his boxing skills to all of us and my head instructor was learning with us. That was one of the most humbling experiences I have ever had. Sparring classes were interesting because we would do a round where we were not allowed to kick but we could throw punches all we wanted. That's what really made me realize that I had a obvious defensive gap. Kenpo Karate has been helpful because since its a well rounded art, its been strengthening my weaknesses. This is why no art is superior and not just the art in question but also the physical capabilities of the practitioner. We are still human and as such we are all strong in some areas and weak in others. You put together 4 martial artist 2 of them are from the art of kung fu and 2 are from karate. The first kung fu student won against the karate student because he was faster and had great stamina but the second kung fu student lost because the karate student he faced was more tactical and though the kung fu student was faster the the karate student. The kung fu student didn't have the same stamina as first one who was victorious. I can make millions of these scenarios but this to me proves that there is no all powerful martial art that can crush the rest. Sorry for rambling, im very passionate about this. Lol.

I really must say; I'm questioning my choice of art. After trying to choose between "Traditional" American Kenpo or Kenpo 5.0, I was able to find a Kara-Ho Kempo instructor willing to do private lessons. Believing this art was a more simple and direct ancestor to EPAK; I jumped on it! But, now I'm finding that Professor Chow approved many additions from GM Kuoha's experience in other arts. The most problematic for me being elements taken from Tae Kwon Do, especially the kicks and acrobatics. I'm still committed, and I won't make any decisions until I have a better understanding of the art as it should be practiced; I'm extremely out of shape, so right now nothing is likely to spark me until I can perform it right. I have also been contacted by Hanshi Bruce Juchnik about possible training in Kosho Ryu Kenpo in my area; so I dont really have a lack of options. Kara-Ho still seems like it can be exactly what I'm looking for if I just have some faith and try my hardest.

@@ArtofOneDojo thank you for the advice! Is there any chance of doing a deeper look at the ancestor arts of EPAK (Kara-Ho/ Kosho Ryu, for example) and what they have become? Your videos got me back into martial arts after a decade. And your American Kenpo series made me look beyond tradition to the "american" styles. I really appreciate this channel. I've committed to a year's membership with the Kwai Sun Company, so I will reevaluate things when it comes time to commit again! I think IF I did leave, I would go for 5.0 or maybe Kosho Ryu. As an (very fascinated) outsider, I have to say 5.0 strikes me as the legitimate evolution of American Kenpo. I dont know that any other art is as tailored to the current situation in fighting, exactly like EPAK was meant to be when founded. Just one new guy's opinion! Keep it up!!!

I'm just gonna put it out there; my base is in aikido and kyushojitsu. I've also worked with weapons, both traditional and improvised, and a little with traditional Chinese martial arts just to round out and expand upon my base. (taijiquan and aikido utilize similar mechanics. Qin na found in styles like eagle claw works like kyushojitsu with more grappling) I have used my art in the streets, and, though I'm not proud to admit this, in prison... If what I know can avail me there, it's legit. I know these are some of the most doubted martial arts out there, but as Dan here has said before, it's all in HOW you train. More often than not, aikido is taught for spiritual growth and kyushojitsu, let's face it, is just hype. That's not how it ALWAYS is, but that's what most people out there are going to encounter, so I get where all the spite and contempt comes from. I learned differently. I trained more realistically. Now, I teach these arts in a way that's extremely rare, but I can't be the only one. Yes, you really can use any martial art for self defense, if you just train sincerely and realistically. "No touch KO" is not martial arts. At best, it's mentalism. It's a parlor trick. Real martial arts use physical techniques. Qi ("chi") is not mystical energy, it's "subtle" energy, but very real. Qi is part if all martial arts, even boxing, but it's not part of "no touch" because that's not a martial art, it's performance art. So don't come at me with that nonsense. Any martial art that trains physical techniques with live resistance, and is humble enough to accept when there are flaws, and committed enough to work out and correct those flaws, CAN be used for real self defense!

Art of One Dojo the best thing about it is techniques, discipline and all body work. When every training you get stronger. Exams there are hard. Rlly hard. Like 10th kyu wasnt hard at all but 9th kyu its different. KATA was most comfusing onein 9th kyu belt exam bcz when you are doing KATA you have to focus only to kata and ignore backround sounds. MY fav thing about KYOKUSHIN KARATE is how brutal it is. With whole force kicks and punches are rlly dangerous. Mae geri kick can knock you in seconds . And with punches qith whole force to stomach can hurt you rlly badly. So thats why kyokushin karate is one of the most brutal martial arts and thats why i like it. You learn not only how to kick ass but you learn selfdefence, respect, discipline and that you have to earn everything

There isn't a best martial art. Only a dedicated student. That's it. How many years you train is what makes the difference. Time & effort is what translates into skill. A martial art isn't supporting a sports team and shouting loudest that yours is best. And a martial art is not a martial sport. If it has rules and competition, medals and trophies, tv promotion etc it is not a martial art. If you want to be adored as the 'best', and have millions of adoring fans, ok. But that is a different road. It is not a martial art. You can choose ultra pragmatic cqc styles related to modern battlefield or intelligence warfare or you can go with more of a mind body approach but a martial art will always have a 'no rules within legal constraints' in practical application. Is there somewhere and someone you can practice with 2-3 hours 3 or more days a week, every week and are you prepared to practice on your own for 1 hour a day minimum solo also? You don't have to be fit to start, practice does that. 2 hours practice in a fancy uniform in an expensive gym will not cut it against someone on the street who has done 6 hours a week hands on partner practice and an hour a day solo (e.g bag work etc). The instructor can be a help if they can impart knowledge but even the best teacher will be no use if the student is lazy and wants it all handed to them on a plate. Be prepared to 'eat bitter' and learn. The most expensive and stylish vehicle in the world is no use if you can't drive it. With a martial art your body is the vehicle and you tune and customise it to the environment you are faced with. Your body type and self-defence needs should effect your choices as should your psychological needs. Visit as many training halls in your locality as possible, meet the instructors, watch the students. I could make a list of martial arts but really it is about what you have available and what you are prepared to do that are important. Time and effort equals skill.

There isn't a best martial art. There isn't *ONLY* a requirement to be a dedicated student. A competent instructor is also needed. The balance between the devotion a student has to martial arts (or a particular chosen art) and the devotion their instructor has to teaching, needs to align properly. Some students work better with different teachers, and different types of lesson structure. If you're interested in martial arts, you shouldn't jump on the first, or the cheapest, or the currently-trending martial art lessons you can find. You should look around, talk to people from multiple schools - both the instructors and their students. You need to pick a course which suits you, so you can learn what you want, in an effective manner. Just being a devoted student won't negate having a teacher you can't learn from.

Honestly, as much as I LOVE traditional martial arts, MMA schools (that teach Boxing, Muay Thai, and BJJ as a base) are GREAT for learning how to fight quickly and get hands on experience fast as they are heavy on sparring based training. Maybe also study Krav Maga or a GOOD tactical school one weapon defense (MMA won't teach that).

I am a blind martial artist and have trained in a few different arts. The ones that I've stuck with is boxing and BJJ, but also some Judo. All of these are "sportier" arts, but most rulesets will not include a blind class or even let blind participants compete under the same ruleset against sighted opponents. I still keep training them because I think they're fun and I love them. I also love the comeraderie that is buiilt in the clubs I go to. And finally - yes - I have used Judo and BJJ (but funnily enough not boxing) to defend myself. Only twice, but both times it was attempted robbery by random guys who probably saw the cane and thought that I was an easy victim.

@@ArtofOneDojo I started my MA training while I still saw. When I was kid I trained traditional JJ and Judo (and did ONE semester of kickboxing). Then for many years I did nothing but started again just before I turned 30. Now I did Filipino arts and Silat. It was fun and all but I didn't really find "my" thing until I started with BJJ and eventually took up Judo again. And, later, boxing. I lost my eyesight due to an accident back in 2013 but I simply _decided_ that I wanted to keep with the grappling training. Boxing, however (as any kind of striking) became really, really scary. Grappling - Judo and BJJ, however - didn't change much. The first few months the group dynamic in the club changed, until everyone sort of realized that I wasn't made of porcelain and that I could still roll with the same intensity as before. In 2014 I got my black belt. I just took up boxing again. Last August I finally found a trainer that was willing to train me, and a gym where I was accepted. So now I do it twice a week, and I love it, although it is still a bit intimidating. But I feel that I almost HAVE to do it, as a mental training. Not being afraid to get hit, I reason, will help me to be less afraid in general. I don't know if this sounds crazy to you, but... Thus is my story, anyway. Oh - and one final thing - sooo sorry if my English is hard to read or understand. I am Swedish and English is not my native language. Again, my apologies. Thank you for your channel! I think you should have a Patreon or Merch or something, so I could send money your way and support it. Love your content! Osu!

I really appreciate your comments, feedback, and support of this channel. These are the reasons I want to continue doing this :) And no worries, your English is pretty good, I didn't even question it. I also find your story fascinating. Many people would have simply given up, I can't imagine how hard it is to adapt from suddenly losing your eyesight. That's a major life changing situation and I think most people would stop training. But you didn't, and I think that's incredible. Especially with the boxing, striking arts are hard enough as it is, but even more so in that circumstance. The grappling makes sense, since you are in constant contact with your opponent and after you've trained enough you can "feel" their movements and anticipate their techniques, so that's an interesting aspect itself. It really speaks to how dynamic those arts can be. Keep up the great work, I really and truly admire your dedication to your training. It says a lot about you as a person and a true Martial Artist :)

I've been studying martial arts for 51 years. I've studied Western, Japanese, Okinawan, Korean, Chinese and Thai martial arts. There is no one art that is "the best." All have useful techniques and conditioning that can make one a capable fighter. For me the best method is to take the best of each and make them yours. Learn to punch like a boxer, kick like a Tae Kwan Do In or Nahk Muay, throw like a Judoka or Hapkidoin, and grapple like a Jujitsuka. If you don't want to study all of these arts, as I have, to achieve this, then I recommend Jeet Kune Do, which incorporates techniques from all. But the bigger point to all of this is the necessity to cultivate, if you don't already have it, the warrior spirit. If you have that, it doesn't matter which art you train in. It's about how hard you train physically and mentally.

It's funny to see debates about the best martial arts styles when in reality it doesn't matter in a real danger situation. If you have a group of men dealing drugs near your house and terrorizing the neighborhood... how would you react? A confrontation with them? knowing that these men are criminals? Your options are simple: call the police (which can also be dangerous) or avoid them as much as possible. So all the money you spend on martial arts is for your health and self-esteem.

The martia arts for me I picked is the bujinkan( samurai/ninja arts). Such a complete systems should more appropriately be referred to as a warriors arts as they were usually developed by professional warriors who had more time to devote to developing and mastering a wider range of skills. Peasant fisherman and farmers in Okinawa created karate-do from a Chinese martial art called Ch'uanfa , and karate is fairly simple and unsophisticated because the people who learned it spend their lives in other pursuits. In Japan warrior arts are referred to as bujutsu, and are the combat arts from which most of the watered-down budo arts (i.e. those with the suffix -do) were derived (such as judo, kendo, aikido, iaido). The bujutsu were developed by Japanese warriors who spent their lives testing their skills in real wars, and then furthering refining their techniques based on their real experiences. This is a complete range of martial skills I've learned and it is far better to learn a system that has already been refined over many centuries, and which has been tested on the battlefield (most modern martial arts like karate and taekwondo have not).
