I’m very interested in the real life applications of all these principles, and why that particular principle is used in stead of others. Some principles just look very (unnecessary) complicated to me, but an engineer does not choose something for no reason…

Most of the rotating things were fluid pumps, albeit not very good designs vs real ones. the rest were random linkage systems for random applications, usually you find stuff like this on assembly line packing machines. and a few gears and intermittent motion mechanisms
@Thinginator
@Thinginator 2 жыл бұрын
@@adriansue8955 I remember seeing at least one of those fluid pump designs used in a power steering pump on a car, so they can be useful. One of the other fluid pumps uses a mechanical principle that I've never seen in a fluid pump, but I know Hyundai uses for variable cam timing in some engines.

I'm always wondering how people can come up with contraptions like these. I'm assuming there is some form of mechanical engineering "cookbook" that contains recipes on how to best implement certain motions, but it is also kind of an art form?

Liked the clip. The slotted pump is real and it is used as a vacuum pump. What was not shown was one end is weighted. Or there is a spring pushing the member through the slot. The whole system is filled with a medium weight oil, as in crank case oil.

0:01 The outer shell carries the fluid upward and the inside carries it downward. Intuitively, it seems that this device does not work well as a pump.
@ARockRaider
@ARockRaider 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's pumping upward, yes some fluid may get recycled through the center but not nearly as much as through the sides. This may not be a pump, rather metering for some pressurized substance. But my guess is as good as yours.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but isn't the third one (0:33) impossible? When the purple bar is vertical, it contacts the yop and bottom of the circle, yet it can fit horizontally below the center of the circle, which means it would have to be shorter.
