This video has hit the nail right on the head for me. Since starting year 11 I've always been aiming to get a 98-99 ATAR altho the course I want to do at uni doesn't require that high of an ATAR. And obviously to achieve that ATAR I've been studying really hard and sadly neglecting my health and extracurricular activities. (Being Asian with strict parents kinda made it worse 😅😅😅) After watching this video I completely changed my view on my goals for the HSC (98-->95) bc I do agree that as young adults it's better for us to be good at a broad range of subjects (thus more career options) rather than doing extremely well at only one particular field. Anyways I really enjoy watching your videos:))) thank you for sharing these amazing tips😄😄😄

Why does philosphy need a high atar? This one took me by surprise a bit.

ATAR for any course is based on demand - so because it's a high demand course (and there are only a few of them available), the ATAR remains high. It's also because it usually gets integrated as PPE - Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

Considering how unpredictable your marks can be (especially in English), this video is so true

So, I want to become a Speech Pathologist but idk if I'll get an ATAR high enough. Do u guys know any pathways I can take to become a Speechie even if I dont get the right grades? Becoming a speechie is my dream in life and it makes me the happiest, but I'm scared that it just wont happen in my life because of my average marks.

Hey Esther! There are plenty of pathways you can take if you don't meet the ATAR, we've actually identified one for speech pathology in this article! artofsmart.com.au/science/usyd-speech-pathology/ Otherwise, we've got a ton of articles like this 👉 artofsmart.com.au/university/alternative-university-entry-pathways/ you can check out :)

If possible, apply for early entry! A lot of people get in this way as they look at your Year 11 marks, relevant subject marks, or even leadership positions at school :) If all else fails, you can transfer in after your first year at uni!

I understand how adjusting you ATAR goal to something more realistic and not absurdly high can be smart and strategic. But this video brought me more stress than relief. If more universities really are going to start looking at applicants through a variety of factors besides just the student's ATAR, would I have to focus on not just my studies but multiple factors that can help me "stand out"? In the years I am preparing and studying for my HSC exams, will others around me be nudging/recommending me to adding a few extra-curriculars on my plate, further adding pressure and stress on me? Although HSC exams itself can be very stressful and pressuring, I find some assurance that as long as I fully devote myself to my studies, assignments and exams, I can get a good ATAR. Which gives me a good chance in getting accepted into the university I want. Yet, now in the following years, things are going to change?

I think the take-out here is that actually, you could reduce the stress and pressure on academics, and by doing some co-curriculars that you love and enjoy, actually have more fun, and stay healthier, while also creating more opportunities for yourself longer term :)
