Hi! This is wonderful. I got an OTTB and knew zip. I used videos to help me. This video in the beginning would have helped a bunch. I will save it.

This cutting an angle technique has worked brilliantly with my ex racehorse when leading him keeping him from getting ahead of me when he’s fresh. My problem is with lunging, I had many riding lessons but only 2 lunging lessons on a well trained schoolhorse so am very inexperienced with it. I lunge prior to riding as he is fresh initially, but he goes straight into trot or canter right away soon as I point him out then doesn’t stop for what feels like ages. None of my voice commands or body language have any effect at slowing him down or controlling his gaits. Yet when riding him afterwards he listens and obeys every aid, so sensitive and willing, great communication there. Should I persist with the lunging getting a trainers help or is what you are doing here a good substitute for taking the edge of that initial excitement prior to riding? I am not in an arena just a big open field. I realise the way the lunging is going with him doing as he pleases is setting a bad precedent and my communication to him is ineffective.

Hannah Coffey bring his life up just a little ( could be leading, lounging, etc.) then ask him to settle and relax brush him for a few minutes. Bring his energy up again and then allow time to relax again and groom, saddle, graze etc. Notice signs that he is relaxing (licking, chewing, blinking relaxed muscles, head down, etc.) We practice life (energy) up and down throughout our entire session when working with our horses. 1. Don’t bring their energy up too much at once as they may become overexposed. 2. Give them enough time to settle until you see indicators that they are relaxing. ( could take seconds up to 15 minutes or more, so take the time that it takes.) Thanks 😊

Could you do a video about how to train an OTTB to stop overtaking or racing when in a group of horses, ie like on a trail ride?

I’ve been working on this little by little with my 6yo OTTB. He bites and kicks out at me instead of moving away from me. He also is explosive and will take off bucking and kicking in your face at the drop of a pin. He will trot right past me, break into a canter and drag me on the other end of the rope. Any tips? He just has SO much energy and turns it into aggression

Marissa Quigley Space, time, awareness, long lead ropes, round pen, and a lot of turnout! I hope he can go outside and and be a horse. Sounds like a good horse to feature in a video.😀

How would you handle and excited horse who is rehabbing and injured leg--such as, bowed tendon?
@ArtOfTheHorseman
@ArtOfTheHorseman 5 жыл бұрын
It would depend on how much movement they are allowed at the time. The important thing would be to build relaxation in while they are in the stall, and then take them out of the stall a few feet, and then back into the stall, gradually increasing the distance you can leave the stall while keeping them relaxed.

@@ArtOfTheHorseman Thank you. She does pretty well so long as a big breeze doesn't come up or somthing spooky doesn't startle her. Her excitement always takes us by surprise. She sees what we don't, and before we know it, she is aires above the ground---which can cause reinjury. It is a tough case.

@@donnaandmikesmith7035 Yes, rehabbing is always difficult... AND more so with horses that are a more excited variety...Stall rest does not suit them even though it is necessary... Good luck with it! You can always try a supplement that calms them and see if that helps any.

@@ArtOfTheHorseman That would be a great issue to address--with lots of disclaimers.

@@donnaandmikesmith7035 It is a topic I am unfamiliar with as we do not use them. Something more appropriate for a vet to address.
