GALO STUDENTS UNION (GSU) DECLARES 12-HOUR BANDH IN GALO INHABITANT DISTRICTS, AFTER GOVT FAILS TO RESPOND THEIR CHARTER OF DEMANDS
Expressing dissatisfaction with the lackadaisical attitude of the state government, despite the repeated submission of their charter of demands, the Galo Students' Union (GSU) has threatened to initiate a democratic movement in the form of a bandh (strike) on 26th September next in all Galo-inhabited districts.
In a press statement, the GSU stressed that the union has submitted a series of memorandums to the Education Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, the Education Commissioner, the Director of Higher and Technical Education, and other concerned authorities. However, no positive responses have been made yet.
Their demands include the immediate functionalization of the new extension campus of RGU at Donyi Polo Government College, Kamki, West Siang District; the issuance of a notification to the concerned department for the immediate functionalization of the science stream at Donyi Polo Government College, Kamki, West Siang District; immediate sanction of a playground for Government Model College, Basar, Leparada District; immediate granting of Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) powers to the principal of Government Model College, Basar, Leparada District; and the immediate transfer and posting of ministerial staff in Government Model College, Basar, Leparada District.
The GSU also reiterated that on 26th August 2024, they had submitted the same ultimatum to the Chief Minister and held a press conference on the same day, informing the public that the union would resort to a democratic movement if their demands were not addressed within one month.
"The state government is paying no heed to our demands and often shows a lackadaisical attitude, despite the submission of multiple memorandum. Upon reviewing the matter, the GSU found that the demands were not expedited and have been halted by the current Education Commissioner, Amjak Tak," the union lamented.The GSU vehemently condemned such act of incompetence and demanded the transfer of the Education Commissioner to another department where he could perform more diligently.
The GSU convened a meeting on 22nd September 2024 at Likabali, Lower Siang District, with all the federal units of the Galo Students' Union (KKSU, AASU, USGSU, JYSU, RBSU, and BASU), and it was unanimously resolved to proceed with the bandh call
